Carolina Panthers at New York Giants
Pick: Giants -2
Big Balls Brian Daboll who went for two successfully with a little help from Saquon Barkley, ended up getting the win in his Giants coaching debut. This week the Gmen return back to the Jersey swamps of the Meadowlands against Baker Mayfield and the Panthers.
Giants fans will be fired up, very drunk, and very loud and I expect them to drive home happy after this one. Mayfield wasn’t impressive last week sailing a lot of throws and having a ton batted down at the line because of his height.
Daniel Jones wasn’t great either and threw a brutal pick in the endzone, but was playing very smart and efficient prior to that. Essentially this is a fade on Baker, Head Coach Matt Rhule and a follow on Big Balls Daboll in his home opener. GeeeMenn -2.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers at New Orleans Saints
Pick: Over 44
This Saints offense has a lot of options with talent all over. Michael Thomas appears back, Jarvis Landry is a proven veteran and had a great Saints debut, Chris Olave is a promising rookie and Juwan Johnson and Tayson Hill are both talented Tight Ends.
Not to mention Alvin Kamara. As much as I’ve doubted Jameis Winston his performance as a Saint so far has been great with 16 touchdowns and just three interceptions.
Last week he was 13-16 for 216 yards in the 4th quarter alone. I think the Saints can put up 21-27 points in this game and Tom Brady and the Bucs should be able to get at somewhere in the 20s as well. The Goat and Winston should go back and forth and push this one over the total.
Miami Dolphins at Baltimore Ravens
Ravens -3.5
I doubted Mike McDaniel last week in his first-ever game as a head coach, but he got it done against Bill Belichick and proved me wrong. Well, back to fading the Dolphins, this time against another highly successful coach and Super Bowl Champion, John Harbaugh.
McDaniel and the Dolphins certainly did a good job by bringing in Tyreek Hill to pair with Jaylen Waddle and making things easier for Tua Tagovailoa. Tyreek bailed Tua out by going up and catching a poor throw which probably should have been picked. Waddle caught a pass broke a tackle and turned it into a TD. They masked what really wasn’t a good game from Tua overall and now he faces a ferocious Baltimore defense.
Lamar Jackson also missed a few easy throws, but he also made some great Touchdown throws down the field to Devin Duvernay and Rashad Bateman. The Ravens also may get J.K. Dobbins back this week to assist in the run game. Last year the Dolphins gave Lamar fits by blitzing him relentlessly, but that was under a different coaching staff led by Brian Flores.
Will the game plan be similar? Either way, I think Lamar will be ready and the Ravens will have revenge on their mind after losing 22-10 last year. I think Tua is going to have a rough time with this Ravens defense on the road and Waddle and Hill aren’t going to bail him out this time.
Cincinnati Bengals at Dallas Cowboys
Pick: Bengals -7
I was on the Steelers last week figuring there could be an opening week Super Bowl hangover for the Bengals. Will that continue to carry on this week and into the season? The Bengals may not win this division, but with this offense, they should be able to get back into the playoffs in a tough AFC.
They take on a Cowboy team that looked awful even when Dak Prescott was in the game. Now they downgrade to Cooper Rush. CeeDee Lamb isn’t an alpha WR to me, Noah Brown is their two, and Dennis Houston, I still don’t know who he is.
The Cowboys also have Dalton Schultz but this offense is lacking any true firepower. They are missing Amari Cooper and Michael Gallup severely.
The Cowboys will likely rely on Ezekiel Elliott and their defense, but if the Bengals get out to a lead early this game could get ugly. Maybe Cooper Rush surprises and revives this Cowboys offense but it’s highly doubtful. Tee Higgins will return from his concussion, give me Joe Burrow and the Bengals in a bounceback.
Chicago Bears at Green Bay Packers
Pick: Bears +10
Pick: Over 41
We liked Justin Fields and the Bears last week and we even suggested taking them on the Moneyline. The Bears came through with the win in an absolute slop fest in Chicago against the 49ers. Another tough test this week for the Bears against a Packers team at home that should be highly motivated after opening up very flat against the Vikings last week.
Still, Rodgers is out there with a bunch of old veterans, unproven rookies, and a tight end coming off an ACL injury. It may take some more time. The Packers do have the running backs and a solid defense, but this Bears team is underrated in my opinion.
Time will tell but it appears Matt Eberflus can coach. I believe Justin Fields is legit and they can keep up here on Sunday Night. As for the total, I expect the Packers offense to bounce back a bit and Fields will produce enough for this Bears offense to hit over.
