2023 Early Offseason Dynasty Sells

2023-Early-Offseason-Dynasty-Sells

When I am looking to sell an asset in dynasty fantasy football leagues, I am looking from a value perspective. Sometimes it is because I’m not impressed with a player or they lack production early in their career. For the most part, I look through the lens of value. Additionally, I ask myself, “How much can I get out of this asset?” If the return makes sense, then anyone is considered tradeable.

When selling anything, there should be a market and a buyer for that asset. It is much easier to sell attractive assets on your roster than the bottom dweller, depth pieces. When selling, the goal is to free up a roster spot, gain some liquidity, focus on overall roster construction, and have some flexibility going forward. However, when trading players, the focus should be less on being the “winner” of the trade and more on capitalizing on how your dynasty league values certain players.

Every league has diverse market values, so not all of my trade suggestions will work for you. Make sure to consider roster construction and the projected trajectory that your team will follow. Overall, these suggestions are to give you specific examples of what I have done or would be comfortable doing. Let’s check out some players to move early in the offseason.

Javonte Williams

Running Back – Denver Broncos

I was a big Javonte Williams fan when he entered the NFL in 2021. He is a violent runner with a massive home run ability upside. Any time he touched the ball, there was always a possibility the ball would end up in the end zone. All that being said, the reason that I am encouraging you to sell him isn’t because of his skill set or past production. Overall, the biggest concern is the multi-ligament knee injury that occurred last season.

We all know how short the shelf-life for running backs is. Now add Williams’ current injury and the fact that you won’t be able to plug him into your lineup for most of the 2023 season. While this is a different injury, we recently saw a similar situation with JK Dobbins. Dobbins didn’t look the same and struggled to stay on the field throughout the 2022 season. Similarly, I envision a route for Williams close to what we saw from Dobbins.

Williams’ injury wasn’t just his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). In addition to the ACL, the lateral collateral ligament (LCL) and the posterolateral corner (PLC) were involved. For multi-ligament injuries, it makes the timetable to return longer. In addition to that, it adds multiple layers to rehabilitation and recovery.

At this point, it is unsure if Williams will be able to produce similarly to pre-injury. With all of this being said, Williams sits at RB8 via Keep Trade Cut. In this situation, I would be looking to cash out and reroll him into an established veteran or a pick in the upcoming draft. Simply put, there are too many red flags. Use the recent Sean Payton hiring as leverage to move him.

I want to mitigate as much risk as possible on my rosters. You can sell Williams now and buy back in for cheaper midway through the season. He won’t be producing for the other manager.

Rondale Moore

Wide Receiver – Arizona Cardinals

Rondale Moore is electric when he has the ball. While he showed flashes of being the playmaker throughout last season, this offseason will be a great time to capitalize on his value. The Cardinals are in store for a rebuild over the next couple of years, starting this upcoming season. Furthermore, I expect them to start trading away aging assets starting with DeAndre Hopkins.

While Moore is someone I’m selling, I’d hold him up until the Cardinals trade Hopkins away. The Cardinals trading away Hopkins opens a path for Moore to have an increased role in the offense. In terms of the market, Moore’s value will skyrocket because other managers will assume the best possible outcome. You can take advantage of this mindset because there are multiple outcomes to this situation.

We know Moore’s capabilities as an explosive, shifty, gadget weapon in the Cardinals’ offense. However, the downside is that he has only played in 22 of 34 games. Additionally, he has struggled to stay on the field consistently. In dynasty football, you want players contributing to your team, not constantly in the Injured Reserve section on your roster. Looking back, availability was an issue for Moore in college as well.

Going a bit further, Moore wasn’t a big producer on the field. Most of his production during his rookie year came off that one 77-yard touchdown reception. Moore did show some progress throughout his second season but knowing the Cardinals are trending towards a rebuild. Plus, Arizona will be without Kyler Murray to start the year. I am not sure how that offense will look next season.

After Hopkins gets traded, Moore’s value is going to increase. He will be an asset that other managers should want because of the clear path to production. At that point in time, Moore would be the perfect player to chip in with an additional pick to maneuver rookie draft boards.

I would trade Moore to be able to re-roll with another rookie prospect or try to move him for a usable veteran. This move is to cash out on a player that hasn’t impressed throughout his first couple of seasons in the NFL. All this being said, I would like to move him before his value bottoms out.

Elijah Moore

Wide Receiver – New York Jets

Spoiler alert: I’m talking about both of the young Jets wide receivers. Both players are on opposite sides of reasoning why I chose to move on from them. We will start with Elijah Moore

Moore had a great rookie campaign posting a 43-538-5 stat line in 11 games. Everyone thought he would build on his rookie year. Instead, he completely faceplanted throughout his second year in the league. Needless to say, Moore was an unusable asset in fantasy last season, leaving a sour taste for most managers.

Moore is a crisp route runner and strives to create separation. We saw that on full display during his rookie season. Where did it go for his second year? The emergence of rookie Garrett Wilson had some correlation to Moore’s downfall. Moore was a great prospect and a prime breakout candidate for most people before the 2022 season.

I largely blame quarterback for Moore’s struggles because Zach Wilson seemed inept on the field. Aside from Wilson, Moore struggled to be involved even when Joe Flacco or Mike White was under center. I see a quarterback change at some point this offseason. With that news, you should see a value spike for Moore, just enough to move him for decent compensation.

All this being said, I could see a case for holding onto Moore throughout these changes. It is a risky move that personally, I am not willing to make. Once players faceplant in years that we expect some sort of progression, those individuals rarely get their value back. For Moore, he now needs to have a monster season in year three and probably year four to return to where he was value-wise at the end of his rookie year. All in all, I’d encourage you to cash out this offseason and move on to a safer asset with a clear path to success.

Garrett Wilson

Wide Receiver – New York Jets

I hope you have your torches and pitchforks ready because I know this take will be controversial. Trading away Garrett Wilson is strictly a value play and has nothing to do with his talent as a wide receiver in the league. Undoubtedly, he was incredible during his rookie season and looked like everything we expected from the former 1st Round selection in the NFL Draft.

Wilson is currently a top-six dynasty wide receiver according to Keep Trade Cut. With an upcoming quarterback upgrade, the value apex for Wilson will be here before we know it. Furthermore, I see a path where Wilson passes AJ Brown and CeeDee Lamb in consensus rankings. However, I don’t see a scenario where Wilson moves ahead of Justin Jefferson or Ja’marr Chase to take the throne as the overall number-one dynasty wide receiver.

I have Wilson in the same tier as Chris Olave (WR9) and Drake London (WR13). You can move Wilson and get an elite player plus pick compensation back. If I can down-tier, bring in an elite player, and receive a pick or two, I will do that 10 out of 10 times. Comparatively, London and Olave had similar rookie years to Wilson’s, but are valued much differently. Overall, the perceived value is a classic case of market discrepancy that you can exploit.

You always want a budding superstar wide receiver on your roster in dynasty leagues. There comes to a point when the value inflation for a player becomes too high. With that, the correct process is to sell if you get the right price. Even if Wilson becomes the next Jefferson or Chase, you will have enough compensation for the move to be worth it.

That is the worst-case scenario for moving on from Wilson. Typically, managers will always steer towards optimism when evaluating a player. Not that Wilson will take a step back like Moore, but it is in the realm of possibilities. All this being said, don’t trade Wilson for pennies on the dollar. Absolutely do not settle. If you do go ahead and try to sell Wilson, you’ll be able to get a fantastic haul in return. That’s the real reason he’s worth selling high on.

  • Send: Garrett Wilson, 2023 3rd  |  Receive: Lamar Jackson
  • Drake London, 2024 2nd
  • Tyreek Hill, 2024 2nd
