2023-Fantasy-Relevant-NFL-Free-Agents

One of the most exciting parts of the offseason is just a couple of weeks away. Fantasy football is an ever-changing game. Free agency is a big reason because there are so many moving parts each year. We made it easier to track where NFL free agents land with our Free Agent Tracker. I avoided the superstars on the market because every mainstream media is covering them.

With the right landing spot, some free agency decisions will impact the players around them. Furthermore, they could be more attractive assets on the trade market and could be beneficial for the incoming rookies. Every year, situations change for players moving teams and teams welcoming new additions. Here are some NFL free agents who are either fantasy-relevant or just on the cusp of being relevant for your fantasy football teams.

Quarterbacks

To start this one, I want to see where the free-agent quarterbacks end up. I plan on including the following guys; Jimmy Garappolo, Daniel Jones, Jacoby Brissett, Baker Mayfield, Derek Carr, and Geno Smith. Aside from the list above, some honorable mentions worth watching are Gardner Minshew, Andy Dalton, Sam Darnold, and Taylor Heinicke.

Extensions

I expect Daniel Jones and Geno Smith to get contract extensions with their current organizations. Jones specifically played better than most of us expected going into last season. The Giants should add weapons to the offense if they plan to extend Jones. Same with Geno. He took the Seahawks, who were projected to finish in the bottom three in the NFL by nearly everyone, and ended up making the playoffs.

It will be interesting to see how much their teams give them. The rumor is that Jones is asking for $45 million per year. We will see if the two sides agree to something close to that compensation.

Potential Starters

I see Derek Carr and Jimmy Garoppolo on different teams but starting immediately in a new system. Since both players are seasoned veterans, I see them as bridge quarterbacks, not franchise guys.

The Jets and Saints are popular destinations for Carr. It would be an instant upgrade from Zach Wilson or Andy Dalton. Additionally, both teams have a decent amount of young talent, too. I expect Carr to sign somewhere before the start of free agency.

Furthermore, Garoppolo is in the same boat. He is the second fiddle or even a third option to some of these teams. Garoppolo wants to start somewhere. I can’t imagine he ends up with a team that has an established starter. An exciting spot for Garoppolo would be the Patriots and reuniting with Belichick. It all depends on their confidence in Mac Jones.

Backup Quarterbacks

Jacoby Brissett and Baker Mayfield will sign deals as backups this year. Both have proved they can step in when needed. I like Brissett to head over to Carolina to reunite with Frank Reich. Knowing they will be in the market for a rookie quarterback, Brissett would be the perfect guy to mentor throughout the first year.

Moreover, It will be interesting to see what Mayfield does. Do the Rams hold on to him since they’re heading toward an inevitable rebuild? Another team could scoop him up if the Rams don’t want to pay to keep him around to back up Stafford.

Running Backs

Jamaal Williams

The league’s most likable player is next on my watchlist. Jamaal Williams had a career year last season. He rushed for 1,066 yards on the ground and 17 rushing touchdowns. Williams scored more touchdowns last season than his entire career before last year. The catch is that he averaged just 0.24 yards per touchdown (via StatMuse).

Touchdown regression is coming Williams’ way next season. Williams won’t repeat his stellar performance. Either way, he played his way into a decent payday in the off-season and a guaranteed role somewhere. Where ever Williams decides to land will impact the Lion’s running back room either positively or negatively.

Equally important, if Williams decides to return to Detroit, I envision he will have a similar role as he had last year. He would be an early down back in addition to getting most of the goal-line opportunities. With Williams staying, D’Andre Swift’s role would be similar to last year. Williams returning, which is what I expect him to do, would limit Swift’s upside.

I expect Swift to have a better upcoming season whether Williams stays in Detroit or if he decides to take his talents elsewhere. If Williams leaves the Lions in free agency, I don’t think Swift will be the only guy in the backfield. I think the Lions will add via free agency or the draft.

It will be interesting to see how it plays out. Williams is a great locker room guy. The Lions fans adore him, too. If I were the Lions, I would try to retain him.

Wide Receivers

Jakobi Meyers

Jakobi Meyers is always a severely underrated wide receiver in the league. His career up to this point is underappreciated because he plays in New England. The free agency period presents an opportunity for Jakobi to test the open market and be a focal point for a potent offense for the first time in his career.

Comparatively, 2019 was the last season that the Patriots ranked in the top 10 in the league in passing yards. The 2019 season was Meyers’ rookie year. He only started in one game but played in 15. Since Brady signed with the Bucs after the 2019 season, the Patriots have finished 30th, 14th, and 21st in Team Passing Yards. All average or below average ranks.

Coupled with lackluster offenses, Meyers still managed to average 101 targets over the last three years. He tallied up 209 receptions for 2,399 receiving yards and eight touchdowns. Meyers has accounted for 21% of the Patriots’ receiving yards over the last three years.

Meyers ranked 29th in our Consistency Score metric. A few players above him were; Diontae Johnson, DK Metcalf, and Michael Pittman. He was ahead of guys like Tee Higgins and D.J. Moore. Additionally, Meyers ranked ninth in the league last season in quarterback rating per target at 117.1 via PlayerProfiler. He is a consistent and reliable option for any quarterback throwing the ball his way.

In free agency, I want to see Meyers land with an offense that will help highlight his skill set and give him more touchdown opportunities. The best outcome for fantasy would be with the Chiefs or the Bills. I would even settle if he landed with the Giants because I trust Daboll with offensive production.

No matter where Meyers lands, He will be one of the highest-paid free-agent wide receivers this year. Similar to how Christian Kirk got paid last year. I expect a team to offer Meyers $15 million per season. Maybe even more.  All my Jakobi Meyers shares are hoping for a great landing spot. I will be watching closely.

Tight Ends

Mike Gesicki

With tight ends in dynasty fantasy football, you either want guys that can block well so they are always on the field or you want athletically gifted individuals. Mike Gesicki is viewed as an oversized slot receiver in the NFL. He is not a great blocker but he can be utilized as a weapon in the passing game, especially in the red zone.

Unfortunately, Gesicki’s fantasy points per game declining the last three seasons. However, he is expected to leave Miami this offseason and get a fresh start elsewhere. As a player who is cheap on the trade market, if he signs somewhere relevant he could instantly see a value increase going forward.

From a career standpoint, I think it is in his best interest to leave Miami. Whatever team signs Gesicki will have a plan on how to utilize him. I wouldn’t mind if the Commanders made a run for him in free agency. Additionally, we all know how Bienimy loves to utilize tight ends in the offense.

Another spot that came to mind was the Chargers. With Gerald Everett on his way out and unproven guys behind him on the depth chart. LAC would be a spot Gesicki could start right away and potentially be the second or third option in that offense to start the 2023 season.

I hope that Gesicki lands with a tight end friendly team or a team that doesn’t have a lot of depth in their tight end room. No matter where Gesicki decides to go, it will be a value and a fantasy production bump.

There are lots of moving parts and sometimes it makes your head spin trying to keep track of it all. This is why we play dynasty fantasy football. It is a year-round adventure and moves in free agency change the outlook of each league you are in. Let me know on Twitter @FF_Brows what free agents you want your favorite NFL team to go after or maybe a specific player you are keeping an eye on for fantasy purposes. Let’s have a discussion.
