The 2024 NFL Draft class is brimming with wide receiver talent and the Texas Longhorns provide multiple draftable options at the position. Offensive contributors Jordan Whittington and Xavier Worthy are likely to hear their names called during this year’s draft. The third talented wide receiver who could hear his name called is Adonai Mitchell, a former Georgia Bulldog who offered a red zone threat for the Longhorns this past season.

Mitchell scored 11 touchdowns for the Longhorns in 2023-2024. Additionally, providing an impressive 845 yards on only 55 catches, good for 15.4 yards per catch. All in all, Mitchell and Worthy seem to be the highest valued of the trio. However, various mock drafts have both Mitchell and Worthy as first-round picks. In this article, we’ll focus on the bigger athlete in Mitchell by discussing what he will be able to offer an NFL team and dynasty fantasy football managers.

Adonai Mitchell (WR) Texas – Dynasty Rookie Profile

Height: 6’4
Weight: 196

Strengths

Red Zone Talent

Adonai Mitchell was listed as 6’4″ and 196 lbs in his Junior season for the Longhorns and provided multiple scores from within the 20-yard line this past college season. He also scored on the biggest stages, with five touchdowns across five college football playoff games in his three-year career. The most recent once again came in the red zone against Washington in the Sugar Bowl to make it a one-possession game in the fourth quarter. Mitchell’s size shows up in the red zone and that’s why so many have already compared his talents to Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins.

Fluidity

Like the previously mentioned Higgins, Mitchell displays flexibility and fluidity in the receiving game. He has a large catch radius, providing his quarterbacks with a target who can catch the ball up high or when it’s thrown behind him. Mitchell does look to extend the play after the catch, so with his size and his fluidity, he will be a fantasy target who can provide both inside the red zone and between the 20s.

Weaknesses

Small Sample Size

While Mitchell did have a strong Junior year for the Longhorns, his counting numbers remained consistent but with only a few explosive games. In 35 career college games, he only had three games in which he would catch more than four balls, all coming in his lone Longhorns season. In those three performances, Mitchell also provided his only three 100-yard games. His small sample size is a concern and we’ll see if he can be a top two target with consistency for fantasy. However, with his playmaking ability and size, he will still likely be highly drafted.

Strength and Physicality

Mitchell has height and was able to make plays at the college level, but we’ll be hopeful he can add weight and strength across his first NFL seasons. For a player of his size, he was tackled relatively easily at times. Notably, he possesses the speed and agility to be a college playmaker. However, he will have to add more strength when facing more capable tacklers in the NFL.

Furthermore, he will be a red zone target and can’t be pushed around by the bigger defenders if he is to succeed in that role. While contorting his body and flexibility are admirable traits, he will face more physical play off the line of scrimmage. Overall, he will need to add strength to fight through those defensive backs.

NFL Fit and Draft Capital

Adonai Mitchell will be drafted at the age of 21, not turning 22 until October of this year. He is being projected in the first round of certain mocks, while not falling much further into Day 2 otherwise. Teams at the end of the first who have a wide receiver need include the Green Bay Packers, Arizona Cardinals, and Kansas City Chiefs, among multiple more to begin the beginning of the second round. It’s hard to imagine Mitchell falling much further than the mid-40s in this year’s draft, and he should be able to find a role as a team’s top-two receiving option if all goes well.

Dynasty Outlook

With late day-one or day-two capital, Mitchell would likely find himself starting at some point in 2024. With his size and playmaking, Mitchell could find himself as a long-term WR2 option for us dynasty managers. His upside would be consistent with players such as Devonta Smith or Higgins for dynasty purposes. He has shown ability with higher volume, but whether he can be the lead target-getter in an offense all comes down to the landing spot. At this point, Mitchell projects as a talented wide receiver with transferable skills, which can be said about multiple wide receivers in this 2024 draft class.
