Plenty of dynasty managers are questioning this incoming running back class and for very good reasons. The talent that could be stolen in the second round of rookie drafts is limited to the 2024 draft class. While most analysts agree on the shallowness of the group, there’s a name to highlight. That athlete is none other than Michigan’s own Blake Corum.

Blake Corum (RB) Michigan – Dynasty Rookie Profile

Height: 5’8

Weight: 213 lbs

After a dominant 2022 season, many thought Corum, who was a Heisman Trophy nominee, would have entered the 2023 NFL Draft. However, that didn’t happen as Corum said he would return for his Senior year at Michigan.

After accumulating over 1,500 total yards and 19 total touchdowns in 2022, Corum was looking to repeat and push for a National Championship with quarterback JJ McCarthy. Although Corum took a step back in yardage with 1,362 yards from scrimmage, he tallied 28 total touchdowns. All things considered, the juice was worth the squeeze as the old saying goes.

Knock him all you want. Many call him old as he’ll turn 24 late in his rookie NFL season. However, fantasy football managers will fall in love with many aspects of him. Let’s take a look at what he does well and what he has yet to work on at the next level.

Join us today as we break down the outlook for Corum in the NFL. More importantly, we’ll be breaking down his potential fit on your dynasty fantasy football rosters.

Strengths

Rushing Ability

At 5’8 and 213 pounds, don’t let size be a knock on Corum. Pound for pound, he has the explosiveness and power to maneuver through the line and can be a mismatch right off the line. Furthermore, when he is tackled, he falls forward. Additionally, he uses his legs to push for that additional yard. To say the least, don’t let him get in the open space as he will get by those defensive backs trying to take him down with arm tackles.

Footwork

As stated above with getting by defenders with arm tackles, Corum’s footwork makes him slippery in tight spaces, especially with his frame. This alone gives him a chance to have that home-run ability to hit the whole along with picking up chunk yards.

Schemes of Dreams

If you’re looking for a running back who can play in a zone and power scheme, Corum is the back you want. Not to mention, he has proven success in both. A true offensive coordinator’s dream at the NFL level.

Weaknesses

Recognizing Spaces

For as good as Corum has been for the Wolverines, he tends to drift into contact. In other words, he tends to not see wide open spaces towards the outside. Here, he tends to run into his contact blockers, to where if he jumped to the outside, a two yard gain could have turned into significantly more.

Top-End Speed

While scoring 28 total touchdowns, Corum didn’t have many big runs as defensive backs were able to chase him down. Unlike fellow team mate Donovan Edwards, the top-end speed just isn’t there. Additionally, he tends to try and bounce too far outside, causing himself to play out of position.

Receiving Ability

While he dominated the running game, his receiving game has you begging for more. Corum topped out at 24 receptions and that was back when he was a sophomore. Furthermore, he has three total receiving touchdowns. One over the last three years. However, he does have solid hands. He was just not needed as the Wolverines tended to rotate him out on passing down.

Age

This alone is the biggest knock on Corum. Especially for dynasty fantasy football purposes. While we love running backs who are in the 20 to 22-year-old range, Corum’s knock is that he is a mid-23-year-old back. He will be looked at by many and it will be said that he had the advantage against defenses as he was an older player compared to most. However, his dedication to the Michigan program should not be a knock on him. In the end, it could be because many may see him as a rookie-only contract type of player.

NFL Fit and Draft Capitol

Corum is projected as a Day 2 pick in the upcoming draft. Plenty of teams will be on the lookout for a running back like Corum. He has the potential to be a  Day 1 rotational back. However, he needs to work on his pass protection to help him become a well-rounded back.

Dynasty Outlook

Based on his skill set and what we know now, Corum strikes me as someone who could turn into an every-week RB2. No matter where he lands, he will fit in well. In our dynasty rookie ADP, Corum is currently regarded as a second-round pick, compared to most. I can see him sticking here for now, with the 2024 NFL Combine coming up, he could move up more. Ultimately, after the 2024 NFL Draft, he could move as high as the end of round one in your dynasty rookie drafts.
