Jacob Cowing (WR) Arizona – Dynasty Rookie Profile

Height: 5’8

Weight: 168 lbs

Cowing played his last two seasons for the Arizona Wildcats, catching 85 and 90 balls in each year. He also scored 13 touchdowns in 2023, displaying agility and speed as well as ability in the red zone. Cowing is not the largest wide receiver, but with his route running and speed, he could carve out a role as an NFL slot receiver.

Cowing’s weight is on the smaller side, but we’ve seen receivers such as Tank Dell and Jordan Addison come in at similar sizes and still produce. Cowing isn’t going to be drafted with a top-50 pick, but he could very well become a higher Day 3 pick for an NFL team. Let’s take a look at what he does well and why he could still find a starting spot at his size.

Strengths

Route Running

Cowing’s greatest skill is his short-route running ability. He operates well across the middle of the field but also is quick getting to the flat and away from defenders. He has good agility and paired with good hands, it’s easy to see why he got defensive separation at the college level.

Secure Hands

With Cowing, he isn’t the biggest or quickest, but his skills in routes and being a secure receiver to throw to are why he’s draftable. If he does become an NFL slot, he will hopefully be schemed into space or get the ball quickly from the quarterback. Additionally, he can be a playmaker with his short-area quickness and beating defender. However, that volume from the slot will have to be earned to start his career.

Weaknesses

Small Size

With Cowing being on the slighter side, his 4.38 40-yard dash output will have to show up every Sunday for him to be a difference-maker. While Cowing does have good agility in the open field, he isn’t always the fastest player on the field. To prove himself as a consistent fantasy performer, he’s gonna have to become a bit stronger and still retain his shiftiness.

NFL Fit and Draft Capitol

Cowing figures to be a Day 3 pick but if he gets a few team workouts in the coming weeks, he could work himself into an organization’s draft board for late Day 2. Good teams for Cowing fit-wise are teams such as the Steelers, a team that just moved on from Diontae Johnson. With the recent addition of Russell Wilson as well, the short passing game in Pittsburgh may be an area where Cowing can thrive. Other fits for Cowing may be younger squads such as the Cardinals or a team like the Jaguars with a need for the position.

Dynasty Outlook

Cowing’s dynasty outlook should be well-hashed out early in his career. For us dynasty managers, this will be a fourth-round dart or priority undrafted free agent. He will be a Day 3 receiver and will need to show some level of production early in his career. If he can become a safe target in a team’s short passing game, Cowing’s best outcome is a PPR contributor with 5-6 catches in a good week. Cowing can do that if he shows the same smoothness and receiving skill to win at the next level. Based on where he’s going in our latest dynasty rookie ADP, Cowing may end up being a solid value.
