4 Players to Buy Low or Sell High - Dynasty Football (2024)

Dynasty fantasy football leagues operate much like the stock market. Knowing when to buy low and sell high on your players is crucial. Selling players at their peak and buying them at their lowest points is key to maintaining high value in your dynasty fantasy football roster throughout the year.

Whether your team is contending or planning for the future, it’s important to constantly seek opportunities to enhance your team’s value. Doing this ensures that your dynasty roster has value throughout your team’s life. No one wants to be known as the team who has a bunch of expiring assets.

4 Players to Buy Low or Sell High in 2024 Dynasty Football

In the end, we’re here to help you improve your rosters and win a dynasty championship. Use our expert insights to stay ahead of the competition and build a championship-caliber team.

Below are two players I’m considering selling high on, and two players I’m looking to buy low. Let’s get into the picks.

Sell High

CJ Stroud QB Houston Texans

CJ Stroud has arguably been the most talked-about player in the dynasty community. Stroud burst onto the scene as a rookie quarterback for the Houston Texans. In 2023, he averaged 18.7 points per game (PPG) in 4-point-per-passing-touchdown leagues over 15 games, per FantasyPros. Notably, his 18.7 PPG ranked him as QB10 among quarterbacks.

While QB10 is impressive for a rookie, Stroud is currently valued as QB5 according to our latest dynasty rankings. At just 22 years old, Stroud is undeniably one of the rising stars in the league. However, his dynasty ranking as QB5 seems to be near his ceiling.

Stroud’s potential is limited primarily by his rushing ability. He only averaged 11.1 rushing yards per game, placing him 21st among quarterbacks. Players with top-tier rushing capabilities, like Josh Allen and Jalen Hurts, often have a clearer path to becoming elite fantasy quarterbacks.

While Stroud is undoubtedly one of the top young quarterbacks, I’m comfortable downgrading to pocket passers like Joe Burrow (QB6) or Jordan Love (QB11) in dynasty leagues.

For greater upside, I would consider trading Stroud for Anthony Richardson (QB8) or Kyler Murray (QB9). These two quarterbacks have the potential to be top five in quarterback rushing yards for years to come.

A dark horse trade candidate would be going out to acquire Jayden Daniels (QB14). With Daniels’s elite rushing potential, he is a player who can win you fantasy leagues. If I could acquire Daniels plus a first-round rookie pick for Jayden Daniels it would be hard to say no!

Sam LaPorta TE Detroit Lions

Sam LaPorta made a significant impact as a rookie in 2023, dominating as the top tight end in fantasy football. Despite his impressive rookie season, I’m looking to capitalize on his peak value.

LaPorta finished the season as TE1 but ranked third in points per game (PPG) with 14.1. His season, while stellar, wasn’t as dominant as other TE1 performances in recent memory. For instance, he scored 77 fewer PPR fantasy points than Travis Kelce did in 2022 and 61.1 fewer than Mark Andrews did in 2021. When investing in a top-tier tight end, I expect a more substantial positional advantage than LaPorta provided in 2023.

Another noteworthy stat is LaPorta’s ten touchdowns in 2023, four more than any other tight end. Adjusting for these touchdowns, LaPorta would have been TE4. It is hard to project touchdowns from year to year, so there is a good chance his touchdown numbers do come down a bit in 2024.

While LaPorta is a talented player, I wouldn’t hesitate to consider players like Mark Andrews, Trey McBride, or Dalton Kincaid and potentially receive additional value in return.

Buy Low

George Pickens WR Pittsburgh Steelers

George Pickens has experienced highs and lows in his career thus far, making his current market price remarkably low. According to FaceOff’s dynasty rankings, Pickens is currently WR29, which is significantly undervalued considering his potential.

In 2023, Pickens finished as WR22 overall, averaging 13 PPG in PPR leagues. This performance matches Garrett Wilson, who is widely regarded as a top-10 dynasty wide receiver. Despite playing with Kenny Pickett and Mason Rudolph, who faced criticism for their quarterback play, Pickens managed to perform admirably. We often hear that Wilson struggled due to quarterback play, but Picken’s had it just as bad if not worse.

Now, Pickens adds Russell Wilson as his starting quarterback. Hopefully, Wilson can air out the ball and let Pickens go make plays down the field.

The offseason trade of Diontae Johnson to the Carolina Panthers opens up additional targets for Pickens. In games where Johnson was absent due to injury in 2023, Pickens averaged 16.6 PPG, which would have ranked him WR11 for the season. If he can match those numbers in 2023, the sky is the limit for Pickens.

I would consider trading players like Tee Higgins (WR20) or Jordan Addison (WR27) to acquire George Pickens, potentially adding extra value to the deal.

Tank Dell WR Houston Texans

It may seem contradictory to list CJ Stroud as a “sell high” candidate and Tank Dell as a “buy low” candidate. However, there’s a compelling case for Dell. Dell demonstrated his potential as Stroud’s primary target during his rookie season, averaging 26.19 PPG in 2023 in his final three games before suffering a season-ending injury. This performance would have exceeded WR1 CeeDee Lamb‘s output by nearly three points, showcasing Dell’s immense upside at his current WR24 price tag.

Despite concerns about competing for targets with Stefon Diggs and Nico Collins, Stroud has publicly praised Dell as one of the NFL’s top receivers. On Micah Parsons‘ podcast, “The Edge,” Stroud included Dell in his “all-star” offense alongside elite players like Ja’Marr Chase and Davante Adams. Such endorsements from Stroud, who will be throwing to Dell for years to come, bode well for Dell’s future.

While Stroud may be a sell-high candidate in fantasy football terms, Dell’s potential as Stroud’s top target makes him an enticing buy-low opportunity. At his current WR24 price, acquiring Dell could mean securing the number one option in the NFL’s most prolific passing offense for years to come.

At the end of the day, the dynasty fantasy football landscape is always changing. A manager needs to change with it. Ultimately, finding the right time to sell and buy players, will give you a giant leg up on your dynasty fantasy football leagues.
