Alexander Mattison Returns To The Vikings – Fantasy Outlook

Fantasy Football Outlook: Alexander Mattison always proves his worth when Dalvin Cook misses time throughout the season. Clearly, the Vikings felt the same way re-signing him to a mostly guaranteed, two-year deal to return to the team. Mattison was drafted in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft and has spent four NFL seasons as the backup to Cook.
Mattison’s re-signing is a clear value bump for him, seeing as the team has invested in him for the next few years. He’s been one of the better backup running backs in the NFL for some time. Now the attention turns toward Cook. Personally, I think the writing is on the wall that they are trying to move him either via trade or by cutting him.
Cook’s contract is the problem. Additionally, I wonder if teams would instead just sign a cheaper running back via free agency or invest in the position in the 2023 NFL Draft. Once Cook is moved or released, Mattison will get the opportunity that fantasy players have been waiting for. After that, you’ll just need to hope the Vikings don’t have their eyes on Bijan Robinson with the 23rd pick if it comes to that.
I will look forward to an entire season of Mattison as the lead back, depending on whether they add another running back in free agency or the Draft. If they don’t, fantasy football players should watch Ty Chandler and Kene Nwangwu going into Training Camp.
