Chris Godwin Fantasy Outlook 2024 – Back to the Slot?

0

The 2024 fantasy football season is close at hand and many drafts will be taking place in August. A player who is flying under the radar this offseason is Tampa Bay wide receiver Chris Godwin. Can Godwin come close to his 2019 WR2 finish or continue to underperform? Find out in this Chris Godwin fantasy outlook for 2024 and dynasty leagues.

In this article, I’ll dive into Godwin’s 2024 fantasy football value, analyzing last year’s performance, his current team dynamics, and his potential for the upcoming season. Additionally, I’ll explore his strengths and potential red flags. Whether you’re contemplating drafting him or trading for him in your dynasty fantasy football league, this comprehensive analysis will help you make an informed decision on Godwin for the upcoming season.

WR Chris Godwin Fantasy Outlook

Chris Godwin’s WR2 finish in 2019 seems like a millennia ago. Since then, his fantasy finishes since then have been WR38, WR10, WR18, and WR28. Most recently, he finished the 2023 season with 83 receptions for 1,024 yards and only two touchdowns.

Last year, Godwin’s receiving teammate Mike Evans finished as the WR4 with 79 receptions for 1,255 yards and 13 touchdowns. Godwin only had one red zone touchdown compared to five for Evans. Both receivers had similar target numbers with 130 for Godwin and 136 for Evans. Clearly, Baker Mayfield sees that both of these wide receivers are talented and deserve their share of targets.

Ultimately, the massive touchdown differential between Godwin and Evans also led to the 28-spot difference in the end-of-season ranking. As we all know, touchdowns aren’t a very sticky statistic. Even if it is Evans. However, if we were to add five more touchdowns to Godwin and take away five from Evans (which could happen this year as the Buccaneers coaching staff has expressed a desire for Godwin to run more routes out of the slot this year), Evans would have finished as the WR11 and Godwin as the WR15. Take that for what it’s worth.

Chris Godwin Fantasy Outlook for 2024

When Godwin finished as the WR2 in 2019 with 9 touchdowns and over 1,300 receiving yards, he ran the majority of his routes out of the slot. Last season he only ran out of the slot 37% of the time.

From Week 14 on, Godwin finished as the WR16 in fantasy points per game. This production was during a time when Godwin’s slot rate jumped from 36.1% to 44%.

This offseason the Buccaneers have stated explicitly that they will use Godwin primarily in the slot. Hopefully, this will help produce better numbers for Godwin this upcoming year and signal a bounce-back campaign.

Chris Godwin Dynasty Football Outlook

According to FantasyPros, Godwin’s dynasty ADP is WR43. At 28 years of age, Godwin may have 2-3 years left of decent fantasy production in him. In my Dynasty Buys and Sells article, I considered Godwin a buy and a rather cheap one at that. There are not many dynasty managers left on the Godwin bandwagon.

Conclusion

Godwin’s current ADP in PPR leagues is WR34 which is almost a WR4. His days being considered as a WR1 are in the past. However, with the news of Godwin going back primarily to the slot, has one optimistic that he can be a reliable fantasy asset this year.

Another 1,000-yard, two or three-touchdown season is clearly Godwin’s floor. With his ceiling in my opinion being much higher. At worst, Godwin can be plugged into a flex spot with the opportunity to provide WR2 upside.

The best part is that with his current ADP, it won’t be costly to take a chance on Godwin this year while the return can be substantial. All in all, Godwin is a solid value in all formats right now.
