According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Detroit Lions are signing veteran running back David Montgomery to a three-year deal worth $18 million. (Source: Adam Schefter on Twitter)

Fantasy Football Outlook: Many believed Montgomery had played his final game for the Bears after last season. The team likes Khalil Herbert and feels they could replace the veteran running back in free agency or the 2023 NFL Draft.

However, Montgomery has been an underrated player his entire career in the NFL. He averaged 7.5 scrimmage touchdowns per season during his four years in Chicago. Furthermore, the veteran running back averaged 3.9 yards per rushing attempt behind a poor offensive line.

More importantly, Montgomery has been a consistent RB2 for fantasy players. The former Iowa State star had a top-five finish in 2020, averaging 15.9 half-point PPR fantasy points per game. Furthermore, the veteran has never finished lower than the RB25 in any year of his career.

With Montgomery coming to Detroit, it means Jamaal Williams won’t return. While D’Andre Swift is still around, the former Georgia star has struggled to stay healthy. Therefore, fantasy players shouldn’t be surprised if Montgomery has a top 12 year in 2023, as he takes over Williams’ role in Detroit.
