Jalen Hurts Signs Record-Breaking Contract – Fantasy Outlook
ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that the Philadelphia Eagles and QB Jalen Hurts have agreed to terms on a record-breaking five-year contract extension worth $255 million with $179.304 million in guaranteed money.
Fantasy Football Outlook: The Eagles said that they were prioritizing a contract extension for Hurts earlier in the offseason and followed through with those sentiments. Ahead of the deal, Hurts would enter the fourth and final year of his rookie deal. But now in the wake of it, he is now tied to the team until 2028.
Although this is a record-breaking deal for Hurts, who could “earn up to a record $54 million per year in new money” according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, when it is all said and done, the Eagles could have secured the elite signal caller at a discount. Keep in mind that all three of Justin Herbert, Lamar Jackson, and Joe Burrow are in line for new deals. Their contracts are likely to exceed what Hurts signed for.
Hurts emerged onto the scene in 2021, where he finished as the QB6 in FPPG (21.4) in 15 games. It was his first year as a full-time starter. But in the wake of the A.J. Brown addition, Hurts went ballistic last season. He finished as the de facto QB1 in FPPG (25.6) in 15 appearances. He got there by throwing for a career-high 3,701 yards and 22 touchdowns while also rushing for 760 yards with 13 touchdowns on the ground, leading NFL quarterbacks in that category.
Though he is outstanding with his legs, Hurts also took a step forward throwing the football. He was the QB4 in true passer rating (97.8), the QB3 in yards per attempt (8.0), and the QB6 in QB accuracy rating (8.0).
Hurts should be drafted as one of the top quarterbacks off the board in fantasy football. As long as he remains healthy, another overall QB1 in fantasy points per game is fully within his range of outcomes.
