Dynasty Faceoff: Joe Burrow vs. Jalen Hurts

Here, our Faceoff Sports Network team will be breaking down two of the top quarterbacks in fantasy football and in the NFL. We’ll be discussing Joe Burrow and Jalen Hurts, and helping you determine which quarterback you should take for long-term purposes in dynasty fantasy football leagues. Really, you can make a case for either quarterback here, but continue reading to see who our experts are taking in this latest installment of Dynasty Faceoff: Joe Burrow vs. Jalen Hurts.

Jalen Hurts (ADP – QB3)

You can’t go wrong with the selection here for what it’s worth. One of my favorite types of quarterbacks to draft is those with rushing upside. Known as the “Konami code”, Jalen Hurts rushed for 760 yards and a league-leading 13 rushing touchdowns. With the addition of AJ Brown to this offense, Hurts was able to take the next step in his progression. Pairing Brown with second-year wide receiver, DeVonta Smith brought this offense into a new aspect and should continue growing. Additionally, what this Eagles team has lost on defense during free agency has me excited even more for what this offense can and will do.

If you haven’t guessed yet, I am taking Hurts over Burrow. Even though Burrow may have one of the best wide receiver duos in the league, the Brown/Smith combo is right up there with them. Furthermore, Hurts had 13 top-12 weeks with ten of them being top-5 and two as the top overall quarterback. Sure, Burrow finished as the QB4 on the season, but he only had nine top-12 finishes. Yes, three of them were the QB1, but let’s not forget those where he got you less than 20 fantasy points. As shown above, this makes it easy for me to take Hurts over Burrow. Give me the guarantee over the hope and prayer. – Ryan Miner (@RyanMiner_FFB)

First off, don’t hear what I’m not saying. Burrow is an incredible dynasty league asset to have, and possibly for a few years longer based on play style. However, we all still want to “win now” in dynasty fantasy football leagues. Also, MVP Candidate, Hurts isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

Hurts was a major fantasy contributor in 2022 and beat Burrow in almost every meaningful fantasy metric. Hurts’ Consistency Score of 15.07 (No.1 among all quarterbacks) was almost two and a half points higher than Burrow’s (12.58, ranked 4th). Additionally, he had a higher median points per game (27.63 v 20.08), a higher percentage of games over average points per game (57.14% v 43.75%), finished more games as a Top-12 QB (81.25% v 64.71%) and while Burrow edged out Hurts with a higher ceiling (39.24 v 34.7), Hurts “floor” was higher at 15.96 compared to Burrow’s lowest game of 13.48.

Hurts also has a more balanced type of fantasy football production with one of the more impressive radar charts for fantasy points distributions. Burrow relies almost exclusively on throwing the ball, especially for touchdowns. However, Hurts’ points are far more evenly distributed with rushing, considering he had the fourth most rushing yards among quarterbacks (760) and the most rushing touchdowns (13).

On top of that, his peak of fantasy points actually came from passing yards, not touchdowns. This makes him, essentially, matchup-proof. He is a true “set it and forget it” quarterback. Considering PFF graded the Eagles’ offensive line No.1 all season in 2022, I don’t see him slowing down anytime in the near future. – Phillip Caldwell (@DumpsterDiveFF)

I’m going to tip my cap to MVP candidate, Hurts, in this conversation for a few reasons. While Burrow throws to arguably the best wide receiver tandem in the league. The Eagles’ wide receivers deserve their flowers. Brown and Smith were both top-10, PPR wide receivers last year (6 and 9 respectively) while tight end Dallas Goedert finished 5th in average fantasy football points per game with 11.8. Continuity is crucial, and while uncertainty awaits Cincinnati, the Eagles are positioned nicely. Furthermore, Brown is under team control until 2027, Smith is on his rookie deal until 2026 and Goedert’s extension runs until 2026. Get used to these high-flying Eagles.

Burrow gets his points the traditional way but, here’s where Hurts runs away with the argument. Miles Sanders leaves behind almost 1,300 rushing yards from 2022. Newly acquired running back Rashaad Penny has never played a full season, and I think Hurts will be asked to shoulder some of that absence.

Now, he’s still sitting behind the best offensive line in the NFL last year as he looks to make it three straight years with double-digit rushing scores. The Eagles’ defense has seen a ton of turnovers, and the offense could be forced to play catch-up in 2023. After never having less than 16.9 fantasy points in a game last season, Hurts needs to be discussed (and drafted) with the premier dynasty fantasy football quarterbacks. – Anthony Caccia (@PotatoCommish)

Joe Burrow (ADP – QB4)

First off, let’s be clear that Joe Burrow is elite and so is this Bengals offense. However, so is Jalen Hurts. Despite the offensive line concerns, if you still have them, things are trending up over the last couple of seasons. Between Burrow, Ja’Marr Chase, Tee Higgins, and Tyler Boyd, there is just a ton of talent, and Chase has separated himself from them all very quickly. In his rookie campaign, Chase put up 266 yards against the Chiefs, the most ever in one game from a rookie wide receiver. Another record he broke was Chad Johnson’s single-season record of 1,440 receiving yards, finishing the regular season with 81 catches for 1,455 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Ultimately, I’d take Burrow over Hurts due to the future outlook and the pass-heavy offense. Chase is arguably the best young wide receiver in the game and Higgins would easily be the top option on plenty of offenses in the NFL. That being said, you can’t really go wrong with either and Hurts has absolutely proven himself as well.  – Aaron Schill (@aaron_schill)

Burrow and the Bengals’ offense had the third-best pass rate over expectation in the NFL in 2022. The upgrades on the offensive line along with possible improvements at running back and tight end could make Cincinnati the best offense in the entire league. Chase and Higgins will continue to be the best wide receiver duo in the league for years to come. Burrow does lack rushing upside compared to Hurts but makes up for it with one of the highest ceilings as far as fantasy quarterbacks go.

There’s no doubt that Hurts came into his own in 2022. He led in the MVP race before an injury knocked him out of contention late in the year. Outside of Lamar Jackson, Hurts has the highest rushing ceiling for quarterbacks. Furthermore, he improved by leaps and bounds as a passer with the help of former Heisman winner Smith as well as Brown.

The Eagles have an older roster and have already seen major changes this offseason, those include the offensive line down the road. Overall, his style of play and how many hits he is taking could also shorten his window as a top-tier long-term fantasy football asset. Hurts might be the better fantasy football asset for now but I would take Burrow for the long haul. – Jameson Hutchison (@Jamesonrulez)

Hurts had an outstanding 2022 season, averaging 25.2 fantasy points per game. Surely, he would have been the QB1 if a shoulder injury didn’t cost him two contests. His rushing ability makes him a cheat code for fantasy players. Furthermore, Hurts was 34th in rushing attempts last year (165) but second in rushing touchdowns (13). On top of that, the Philadelphia star had five more rushing touchdowns than any other quarterback. However, I have to give a slight edge to Burrow.

The Cincinnati superstar was the QB4 last year, averaging 21.9 fantasy points per game. However, he still has room to grow as a fantasy football player. Burrow was fifth in passing yards with 4,475 last season. Yet, the former No. 1 overall pick was only 300 yards away from second place. Furthermore, his 35 passing touchdowns were the second most in the NFL in 2022. With Chase and Higgins at wide receiver, Burrow has the top pass-catching duo in the league. While Hurts has a massive rushing upside, I’ll take the guy with the best set of wide receivers. – Mike Fanelli (@Mike_NFL2)
