For the avid dynasty football fan, there literally is no offseason. January brings time to evaluate rosters, consider and make trades, dig in on the draft prep and get ready for the rookie drafts happening in late spring and into summer. Many dynasty managers would argue that the offseason is even more fun than the regular season is. With so many players and roster decisions to consider, we will be breaking down some players with similar value and ADP. Check this one out in Dynasty Faceoff: Justin Herbert vs. Joe Burrow.

Justin Herbert

Ryan Kirksey (@KirkseySports):

I’ll grant the argument of the more stable, younger weapons in place for Burrow. I’ll grant that Burrow was able to lead his team from the brink of elimination to the second round of the playoffs. Herbert loses on both accounts there. But what I also believe is that Herbert is the superior arm in a better system. Despite the fact that Burrow led the league in completion percentage, Herbert’s QBR (66.0) was miles ahead of Burrow (54.4). Herbert also was number two in the NFL in expected points added (EPA) while Burrow came in fifth, apparently with inferior weapons. The icing on the cake is that the Chargers threw 62.5% of the time in 2021 (5th in the NFL) while the Bengals fell far behind at 19th (58.3%). Oh yeah, and Burrow is 25 years old while Herbert is 23.

Ryan Hicks (@realryanhicks):

Herbert has one of the best arms in the NFL. He cracked 5,000 passing yards in 2021, and his improvement each year is visible. I love both of these quarterbacks, but Herbert has the highest ceiling. Per 17 games, Herbert beats Burrow in touchdowns, touchdown percentage, interception percentage, and passing yards. For fantasy purposes, Herbert has two straight top-10 finishes. In year two, he finished second. The surface has barely been scratched. These are both top-five dynasty quarterbacks moving forward, so you really can’t go wrong.

Joe Burrow

Brendan O’Bryan (@OBryanBren):

If I am choosing between Justin Herbert and Joe Burrow as my dynasty quarterback, I’m going Burrow all day. Don’t get me wrong, Herbert is a good young quarterback, but the Bengals’ offense is in a much better place than the Chargers right now. Burrow has a ton of young talent surrounding him, as opposed to the Chargers having an older receiver in Allen and Williams being a free agent. The Chargers have a talented offense, but many of the weapons are aging, often injured, or soon to be free agents. I would take Burrow all day over Herbert due to the current team structures.

Aaron Schill (@aaron_schill):

I fully believe that this ADP is either outdated or hasn’t fully caught up to what’s been happening over the past few months. After tearing his ACL and MCL, Burrow came back far sooner than expected, and while he was cleared to play and looked fine, I’m sure it still took some more time to really feel comfortable on his left knee again. This Bengals offense is finding a groove and Chase has more than proven that he’s the real deal. As much as I like Herbert, the weapons around Burrow are the tiebreaker. Allen is getting up there, turning 30 next April.  Losing Henry hurt and now the Chargers could lose Williams in free agency. I doubt they let him go, but it’s definitely not a guarantee that he’ll be back. I would be totally content having either of these young quarterbacks on my dynasty teams to build around, but if I’m on the clock and choosing between the two, I’ll take Burrow and this loaded group of pass-catchers.

Ryan Miner (@RyanMiner_FFB):

Ja’Marrr Chase, Tee Higgins, and Joe Mixon. What more do I need to say? If you haven’t guessed, I am taking Burrow. With the first three players I named, you know he will have them around Burrow for at least the next three years. Going into 2022, I see Burrow just getting better as his lack of offensive line for 2021 can be noticed when watching. With $62.2 million in cap space, the priority will be to protect Burrow and the assets around him. What more than to improve the offensive line? This team is young and up and coming, which is exactly why I am choosing Burrow over Herbert.
