Dynasty Fantasy Football: 10 Steps for Rebuilding
Before we begin, I need you to be aware your dynasty team is going to be bad this season. Like truly awful. You might win one game this year, and that’s great. Embrace it. Rebuilding your teams is one of, if not the most fun thing about dynasty leagues. Let’s get right to it with Dynasty Fantasy Football: 10 Steps for Rebuilding.
Step 1 for Rebuilding in Dynasty Fantasy Football Leagues
If you have traded away your future 1st round picks, you need to get them back. Start by offering veterans and running backs.
Your league mates must not know you plan to tank, or they will hold the picks hostage. If they refuse to give your pick back or are asking way too much, skip this step.
Step 2
Sell all your running backs. Seriously. The only running backs you should have on your roster are backups that won’t score any points unless a starter goes down with an injury.
“But, I want to keep Najee Harris.” No. Sell him. The only thing he is doing to your roster is giving you a worse pick in the rookie draft.
Step 3
Start by trading for top-end quarterbacks. Package any of your veterans and running backs to go get yourself a top-eight quarterback. Even better if you can get two of them.
Once you have at least one top-end quarterback, you can move on.
Step 4
Time to lock down your young, stud pass catchers. Ideally less than 25 years old. The goal is to stack as much wide receiver talent as you possibly can. It is critical you get a few proven receivers. If you trade for all rookies or potential breakouts and they flop, you will set yourself back a couple of years.
Step 5
Next, comes the fun part. You are going to be the most active member of your league. You should be playing the waiver wire and grabbing every backup running back you can possibly find. You want to target backup running backs for a couple of reasons.
First, they won’t add any points to your roster or help you win games, which will help you secure the 1.01 in your rookie draft. Secondly, once a starter goes down, you will have the handcuff that everyone would normally be fighting for on the waiver wire. Sell that backup to the highest bidder.
Step 6
Load up on all the draft picks you can get. Picks are the only asset in dynasty leagues that have zero risk of losing value and gaining value with time.
You should be grabbing picks that are one and two years out. Grabbing 1st and 2nd round picks that are two years out, will allow you to get them at a massive discount. Teams assume their pick will be late. Capitalize on that.
Step 7
The season is over, and you were a waiver wire wizard. You’ve accumulated draft picks and players. Now is when the fun begins.
Teams must come to you to get back into the draft. They will inevitably have rookie fever and will be willing to overpay to draft that sweet 4th Round sleeper they heard about. DO NOT trade your picks. Yet.
You will have two opportunities to sell high on your picks. That will be after the NFL Draft and while you’re on the clock in your rookie drafts. Grab some of your favorite rookies, because let’s be honest, drafting is fun. However, you should also move some of those picks for proven players.
Step 8
Remember how we sold off all your running backs? Now is when you are going to replenish your roster with rookie running backs that fit your timeline to compete.
Use your picks to draft all the running back prospects you like. You can also trade picks for running backs that the dynasty community is saying to sell because they are “getting old” (Dalvin Cook, Alvin Kamara, etc.). You have a lot of flexibility here to build your roster how you want.
Step 9
A new season has begun, and you were a smart dynasty manager that acquired picks two years out. You are going into the season with picks in the upcoming draft.
During the season, teams will inevitably have players go down and decide they are going to blow up their roster. That’s where you come in. You offer them picks in the upcoming rookie draft for the players they are trying to sell at a discounted rate. You might have their 1st Round pick, if so, hold it hostage unless they overpay. Having picks in the year that you are competing is also helpful as it allows you to plug holes in your roster when injuries arise, or you want to upgrade a position.
Step 10
Go win a championship.
