Dynasty Fantasy Trade Values: Week 3

0

It’s redraft season, which means it’s overreaction season. Every week of games brings new surprises and another subset of data to evaluate. With that information comes some large changes in value, not just for redraft, but for dynasty as well. Week 2 was full of surprises, disappointments, and breakouts. Sometimes the hardest part can be figuring just how much you should pay to get these volatile players, or how much you should demand of those trying to buy them from you. Fantasy football can be a game of quick reactions and decisions that can have effects years down the road. I want to help you get all the information to make your own informed decisions on some of these players each week. I’ll be breaking down some of the more polarizing players each week and talking about their dynasty value. Check it out in my first one here with Dynasty Fantasy Trade Values: Week 3.

Dynasty League Football (DLF) has a lot of great tools for their members that I highly suggest you check out and subscribe to. One of my favorites, that I will use for this article, is the DLF trade finder. They use real trades happening in real-time across hundreds of leagues and compile the information into one searchable database. Today I have chosen four players and collected what I thought to be a representative sample of their trades occurring between their Week 2 game and today. I will break down which trades I prefer to acquire the player in question and which I would prefer to sell him. At the end, I will give a verdict of market value for the player so you can make your own decisions and trades in your own leagues. Use these values to try and go out and make some trades for yourself. Let’s get into it.

Clyde Edwards-Helaire

CEH Trades

Clyde Edwards-Helaire has been one of the more disappointing rookie picks in recent memory. It isn’t because he has been unusable per se, but the expectations were just so high in this Chiefs offense. But failing to receive usage in the passing game and at the goal line has left him as a frustrating fantasy asset. Yet there are still flashes of talent, and still an established role in the NFL’s best offense. A couple of terrible weeks to start the year have led to the 2020 rookie draft darling being included in a ton of trades this week. You don’t often see running back for receiver trades straight up but we have seen a few of those this week including Edwards-Helaire going for JuJu Smith Schuster and Robert Woods straight up. He has also gone for running backs that weeks ago were drafted rounds after him in David Montgomery and Miles Sanders. Perhaps most eye-opening is how much you need to add on top of Edwards-Helaire to get Jonathan Taylor who was vying for the top spot in rookie drafts just a year ago.

Verdict: Edwards-Helaire still carries value but it has dropped quite a bit. In terms of draft picks he can be had in many leagues for a single first now. He commonly goes straight up for guys that were drafted in the fifth round of dynasty startups. Is this a buy low or sell while you can opportunity? That is up to you.

Mike Williams

Mike Williams Trades

Mike Williams has tantalized for years with all the traits and flashes of high-end production. He has a 1,000-yard season, he has a double-digit touchdown season, but he has never seemed to put it all together in a volatile big-play role. The new Chargers coaching staff has decided to give him a more consistent high volume lower ADOT role so far this year and he has flourished. Some are still skeptical though given the likelihood of a breakout this late in a receiver’s career combined with the contract year. The prices are mostly subdued, despite a hot start. He is generally going for other receivers like Michael Pittman, Laviska Shenault, and Odell Beckham who have questions of their own. We can also see him being traded for packages containing depth pieces and early draft picks.

Verdict: Williams has had a hot start, but his price still shows skepticism.  The days of getting him for a second might be over, but you can get for the price of a third wide receiver or packaging a player with a second.

Rondale Moore

Rondale Moore Trades

The expectation for rookie wide receivers is to start slowly, but that hasn’t exactly been the case for Rondale Moore. Despite limited snaps, he has turned 13 targets into 11 catches for 182 yards and actually leads the Cardinals in targets and yardage. He was certainly aided by a broken play in Week 2 that went for a 77-yard touchdown, but the creative usage by Kingsbury has people understandably excited for the small-bodied big playmaker. There were a lot fewer trades this week than I expected involving Rondale considering the noise he has made on Twitter. Still, there are enough for interesting analysis. Moore was a second-round pick in most rookie drafts this year but is already returning packages including both a first and second-round pick. He also is going to cost you a legitimate fantasy starter if you are trying to turn a veteran into a rookie sensation.

Verdict: You are going to have to pay up to get the rookie speedster. A single first may not get the deal done anymore in some leagues, and a strong veteran will likely need to be traded to get Moore back. If you are a contender he may be a difficult trade target, and if you aren’t just be willing to admit it won’t be cheap.

Rob Gronkowski

Rob Gronkowski Trades

Rob Gronkowski might be the most loveable goofball in the NFL, but he is also one of the best tight ends in the history of the league. Yet his age and the plethora of weapons in Tampa Bay led to Gronkowski being greatly undervalued in drafts this offseason and people are regretting it after seeing 12 receptions and four touchdowns in the first two weeks. This explosion has led to his value exploding in redraft, but his dynasty value is a bit more intricate given his age and the fact he likely retires whenever Brady does. He still was able to return some solid assets despite his age this week though getting young upside pieces such as Bateman, Mooney, and Hurts. He was also used to get a long-term tight end upgrade by packaging him with a first to get George Kittle.

Verdict: Gronkowski looks like he might stay as a solid weekly tight end option this year, and those aren’t easy to find. If you are a contender though he might be the piece you need and you can likely get him for a mid to early second-round pick or by adding a depth piece to your late second.
