Dynasty Headlines: Week 8
It’s Week 8 of the 2021 NFL season. By now, the contenders and pretenders in each league are beginning to separate themselves. This is prime moving time in dynasty, contenders getting their last pieces, and pretenders jettisoning veterans. Week 8 has some pretty interesting subplots that could affect everything moving forward, not just this year, but for years to come. Here is what I am paying attention to most in Dynasty Headlines: Week 8.
Aaron Rodgers Without Davante Adams
Aaron Rodgers has had four straight excellent games when Davante Adams has been missing. In 10 total games Adams has missed, Rodgers has a 22:3 TD:INT ratio, a passer rating of 115.5, and has averaged 261.1 yards per game through the air. His last four have been even better. He has gone 96/129 (74% completion rate), for 1,344 yards (336 per game), and a 15:0 TD:INT ratio. When Adams plays, Rodgers is essentially obligated to give him the targets he rightfully deserves. When Adams does not, Rodgers, as suggested by the stats, does not suffer, he just spreads the ball out more. If Rodgers does leave Green Bay after this season, this week might be a taste of what is to come if he plays elsewhere. There is a very serious argument that Davante Adams should be moved immediately. While Rodgers may end up in Green Bay next year, if he leaves, Adams’ value is nuked. Contenders should acquire Adams immediately. Pretenders, move him for capital and prep for next year.
Kyle Pitts Breakout
It seems Kyle Pitts only needed a couple of weeks to adjust to the NFL. His past two weeks have been crazy, as he’s racked up 282 yards. It looks to me as though no team has a defender capable of stopping this man if Matt Ryan can remain accurate, which the last two weeks he absolutely has been. Carolina has a good defense, but if Pitts goes off again, it’s not a fluke, it is becoming the norm. TE1 in dynasty type of norm. We all knew this breakout could happen, but tight ends are notoriously slow to break out. Pitts, however, is not a tight end. This is a wide receiver with tight end eligibility on all platforms. I know we have been spoiled by Travis Kelce, but Pitts can do things no other tight end has ever been able to do. He may not be fully “broken out”, meaning we may see a couple more duds, but I suspect we see another masterful performance from Pitts, and the start of a stranglehold at the tight position began two weeks ago. Do not move him unless you are getting a yacht in return.

Denver Quarterback Shopping?
Teddy Bridgewater currently has a 70.1% completion percentage and has looked serviceable. This week, serviceable won’t do. If Bridgewater can’t score points against Washington with Jerry Jeudy returning, Denver is sunk. Bridgewater may just be a gap quarterback and backup, this is his last chance to prove otherwise. Denver skill position owners, pay attention. Either Bridgewater looks awesome and you have hope, or he doesn’t, and that hope transfers to 2022. Or Gardner Minshew being moved. Pretenders, move Melvin Gordon, although it is likely too late. Contenders, Jerry Jeudy has a floor you gotta love. He also plays into Bridgewater’s strengths. Regardless of who the quarterback is, Jeudy is useful for every type of team, contending or not.
Giants @ Chiefs
This whole game has tons of dynasty implications, so it gets its own category. What is up with Patrick Mahomes, and how long is this going to take? Also, the OL is garbage for Kansas City. Can they address it moving forward? Will Mahomes give back 100 million in salary? Kansas City is a mess, but you can’t bench these studs. An egg this week, and you absolutely can. On the other side are perhaps more questions and Daniel Jones himself has many. Can he shred this pathetic defense? What weapons will he have available? Can Kadarius Toney continue his excellent play, or will he punch a referee this week? And are suspensions a thing for him, can this guy not control himself? Will Kenny Golladay ever play? The Giants refuse to let us see a healthy offense all at once. So this week, hopefully, we get to see enough offense to get a better picture of what that wide receiver room will look like next year. If Jones blows it against this defense, there has to be a real concern that quarterback gets addressed this offseason. Contenders, Sterling Shepard isn’t too expensive yet and he’s getting great volume when he’s out there. Pretenders, move Kelce after he has a huge week. The window is closing on him in dynasty, he likely should have a couple of years left, but if you don’t have a real chance this year, take the house for him, especially if he goes off this week.
Week 8 is great. Rhyming is about timing. And nothing really rhymes with dynasty. Here is hoping that more of your teams are contenders rather than pretenders. Happy football!
