Wide Receiver – Purdue

6’0, 187 lbs

Strengths

Standing 6′ and 187 pounds, Charlie Jones is a shifty wide receiver. He is quick off the snap which serves him well in the short passing game. He is good at getting defenders out of position with his quick feet and shifty style of play. Joines also settles well into underneath zones and is an ideal target for passes attempted under seven yards or so. Finally, he shows good extension in catching the ball as far from his body as possible.

Weaknesses

While Jones is an older prospect at 24 years old, his production is sure to be examined. Sure, in his Senior campaign he went for 110 receptions whereas in his previous three seasons he combined for just 39. His testing numbers at the 2023 NFL Combine are expected to be pedestrian, in addition, the upside he carries is a slot receiver in an offense that doesn’t count on that for the primary productive receiver.

He is shiftiest before he gains momentum, in other words, the longer he runs, the quality of his breaks diminishes. He didn’t put up a ton of good film versus physical cornerbacks either. Finally, Jones is not a burner at the position which limits the dimensions of his game.

NFL Fit and Draft Capital

Unfortunately, Jones’ age will work against him in both dynasty rookie drafts and in the NFL Draft. Like most players, he has hopes to improve his draft stock with a solid showing at the Senior Bowl. He also will attract the attention of those who helmet scout and still fondly remember David Bell and Rondale Moore.

Jones is due to be a 6th Round pick or later in the 2023 NFL Draft and is a potential asset on special teams as a returner. The closest player comparison I have to him in recent drafts is Kyle Phillips, he will look good in the summer workouts to flip for a quick pick, but ultimately shouldn’t end up on many rosters. Overall, Jones should be a destination-based free agent pickup after the draft to stash in deeper leagues or on your taxi squads.
