Dynasty Rookie Profile: Quentin Johnston

Wide Receiver – TCU

6’4, 210 lbs

Strengths

Johnston has a fantastic build for an NFL wide receiver at 6’4 and 210 pounds. On top of that, he has a vertical of 42 inches, broad-jumped 11 feet, and clocked a 4.4 40. These numbers should be on full display at the NFL Combine. Johnston has the best speed, acceleration, and size combination of any wide receiver prospect in this 2023 rookie draft class.

Furthermore, he is great at making catches in traffic, with an impressive catch radius due to his long arms and elite leaping ability. He is a fantastic pass catcher and can make spectacular catches look easy. On top of that, he is just as dangerous in catch-and-run situations as he is excellent at taking the top off a defense.

Overall, he checks every box as he is a fantastic route runner and creates excellent separation on his routes. Johnston has the ideal NFL build and looks like someone who will excel at the next level. He’ll be one to keep an eye on at the 2023 Senior Bowl as well.

Weaknesses

Johnston has elite measurables, but his draft capital could be hurt by minor weaknesses such as pass blocking. If he wants to play at the next level, he’ll need to improve this. Additionally, he had a limited route tree at TCU and is inconsistent at winning in press coverage at the line. In order for him to be a true WR1 in the NFL, he’ll need to polish up those weaknesses.

NFL Fit and Draft Capital

Overall, Johnston is going in the first round in 77% of mock drafts. That being said, wherever he gets drafted he’ll have that elite first-round NFL Draft capital you’re looking for in your dynasty rookies.

One of the most realistic and best landing spots for Johnston is going to the Jaguars at seven overall. The Jaguars could have a very high-powered offense with the addition of Johnston. Trevor Lawrence has seen massive improvements in his second year, and Travis Etienne has looked like a star. The Jaguars’ current wide receiver room consists of Christian Kirk, who will play in the slot, and Calvin Ridley. I’m not overly concerned about Ridley as I think he’ll be good, not elite, but he is also 27, so he isn’t the long-term answer.

His second-most likely spot is with the Texans, which isn’t great. However, if they take a quarterback early like Bryce Young first overall, suddenly, their offense has light. The Texans need to bring in a better team overall for this to be a great situation. If the Texans take Young, a core of Young, Dameon Pierce, and Johnston could be a solid fit for Houston next year.
