Dynasty Rookie Profile: Rome Odunze
Wide Receiver – Washington
6’3, 201 lbs
Strengths
Coming out of Washington, wide receiver Rome Odunze moves with the agility of a man half his size. His transitions in his breaks allow his underneath route running to be a highlight in his game. He leverages defenders well and sells his double moves well. Additionally, he works great settling into space in order to maximize the passing window for his quarterback.
Overall, Odunze’s route running has a great foundation that should only continue to build. He has shown a great knack for tracking the long ball and does well securing low-percentage catches. Finally, Odunze is great after the catch, keeping great spacing of defenders on screen passes and working through contact on attempted tackles.
Weaknesses
One weak point for Odunze is that his hands haven’t caught up to the rest of his skill set. Odunze does take a passive approach a fair amount of the time catching the ball. He scoops the ball into his body and does have concentration drops. With more time working on this, he should become more reliable with the large catch radius he shows. That catch radius will be measured at the 2023 NFL Combine and could help his draft stock some. His work against press coverage will need more refinement if he wants to become an X receiver in an NFL offense.
NFL Fit and Draft Capital
Odunze has the profile that NFL teams will want in their potential WR1. He has been out of the main list of names in part due to his listing as a true Sophomore. The ability to apply for an additional season due to the 2020 season for all athletes for the most part hasn’t applied to underclassmen. Odunze opted into that season of eligibility to be a true freshman for consecutive years.
His recent 1,100-yard season leaves us plenty of positive tape to watch from this past season. He should be someone you try to get in the second round of your dynasty rookie drafts as he does have the potential to be a leading receiver in an NFL offense.
Buffalo and Carolina are two fits I would love for Odunze. In those spots, he wouldn’t have the initial pressure to step in and become the number one target but will develop into a reliable fill-in for the role in the future. He should test well at the Combine and has a lot of great tape. I can see him being a top 10 player at the position going into the 2023 NFL Draft with him earning a 2nd Round draft grade.
