Dynasty Rookie Profile: Zay Flowers
Wide Receiver – Boston College
5’10, 172 lbs
Strengths
Coming out of Boston College, Zay Flowers is one of the notable wide receiver prospects in this 2023 rookie draft class. He has the kind of speed that makes you check the playback speed when you’re watching his game film. No, that’s not 1.5x speed you are watching it at, he is just that damn fast. Flowers has the kind of speed that should be in the 4.3’s in the 40-yard dash and will be exciting to watch at the upcoming NFL Combine.
The way Flowers’ operates with the ball in his hands, he looks like he has more kick return experience than he really does. He sets up blockers in space and can shake a potential tackler with a great lateral jump step. Furthermore, when he has the open field in front of him he is a home run threat. On top of that, he tracks the ball well and doesn’t require pinpoint accuracy from his quarterback in order to come away with the ball.
Weaknesses
Flowers loses nearly all his effectiveness if a corner can physically engage him. He isn’t known for shedding this contact. Additionally, this doesn’t bode well for his ability to block others. His hands are not consistent and he has accrued a series of drops over his career. Furthermore, Flowers’ lack of physicality also translates to him not looking well at contested catches. Unfortunately for his sake, the type of open you’ll need him to be, in order to be significantly effective, doesn’t happen often in the NFL.
NFL Fit and Draft Capital
At his current size, Flowers looks to be a slot receiver at the next level. Additionally, he could have gadget plays to get the ball in his hands early on. The dynasty fantasy football community seems to be split on him. This is partly because of his production numbers over four years in which he totaled 200 career receptions for 3,056 yards and 29 touchdowns. His Senior year specifically, where he had 78 receptions for 1,077 yards and 12 touchdowns. Overall, those numbers are favorable in terms of predicting future success in the NFL.
In terms of the NFL fit, there are plenty of teams that could use a fast slot wide receiver with deep-threat capability. Some of the best fits for him include Atlanta, Minnesota, and Buffalo. Flowers is an early Day 2 pick in the upcoming 2023 NFL Draft and could be a nice grab if you can get him in the second round of your dynasty rookie drafts.
