Dynasty Sleepers and Buy-Low Candidates

lynn-bowden-dynasty-stash-buy-low

We are in the offseason and everyone’s mind is on the results of the NFL Combine aka the ‘Underwear Olympics’ and the upcoming 2022 NFL Draft. With rookie fever heating up fantasy managers are looking for the next big thing or even that player in the 3rd-4th round of rookie drafts like Antonio Gibson, Chase Claypool, or Elijah Mitchell that is going to be the steal of the draft.

In this article, I am going to discuss some players that have maybe been forgotten or significantly undervalued. Now while a few of these players may be on your waiver wire most will be rostered, but don’t let that stop you from targeting these players as I believe they can be bought for 3rd-4th round rookie picks or possibly even as throw-ins in other trades. Now let’s get into these players who might be sleepers or worth buying low on in Dynasty Sleepers and Buy-Low Candidates.

Mitchell Trubisky, QB, Buffalo Bills

Before I get into discussing Mitchell Trubisky I will mention that he might not be someone to target in 1QB leagues, but more of a target in 2QB or Superflex leagues.

Trubisky signed a one-year deal last year with the Buffalo Bills as a backup to Josh Allen and is not likely to be back in Buffalo. There are still several teams in the market for a quarterback that could look to Trubisky such as Pittsburgh Steelers, New York Giants, and the Indianapolis Colts with the recent trade of Carson Wentz to Washington Commanders just to name a few. The Giants are a possibility because Giants’ new GM Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll were both with Trubisky in Buffalo.

In his four years as a starter, Trubisky had an average completion percentage of 64% and made significant improvements after his rookie year. He also possesses the rushing ability and in his best season as a rusher, he had 421 yards in just 14 games which would have put him fifth in rushing yards among quarterbacks last year just barely behind Kyler Murray with 423 yards. In those 14 games in 2018, he finished as a high-end QB2. If he gets a starting job I believe he can have another high-end QB2 season and maybe even finish as a low-end QB1 due to his rushing ability.

Eno Benjamin, RB, Arizona Cardinals

Eno Benjamin has an opportunity to have a significant role in the Cardinals offense in 2022. He still has two more years on his contract while both James Conner and Chase Edmonds are free agents. With the Cardinals having very little cap space, likely, one of them doesn’t get resigned maybe even both of them. If Cardinals do choose to not resign both Conner and Edmonds they will certainly bring someone else in, but with Benjamin’s knowledge and familiarity with the offense, he will be given a chance to carve out a role in the offense.

Benjamin is not a big running back but he has enough size that it won’t stop him from getting on the field. He showed in college that he is capable as a pass-catcher. If things shake out right for him he can be an RB3 and right now can be had for cheap and maybe even as a throw-in in trades. Depending on how deep your leagues are, there’s an off-chance you might find him on the waiver wire in shallower leagues.

Ke’Shawn Vaughn, RB, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Ke’shawn Vaughn shot up draft boards and was over-drafted by many because of Tom Brady going to Tampa Bay, especially before the Buccaneers signed Leonard Fournette. However, after Tampa brought in Fournette, between him and Ronald Jones, Vaughn saw very little time on the field leaving owners feeling sick thinking they wasted a draft pick. Vaughn’s situation is similar to Benjamin’s in that the players standing in his way will soon be free agents. Fournette is likely headed to another team due to cap space, but there is a possibility he takes a pay cut with recent news of Brady returning for another season. Giovani Bernard is not guaranteed to be back either and is 30 years old. This just leaves Jones who, also is a free agent, I could see re-signing with Tampa Bay, and even if that happens there is still plenty of opportunity for Vaughn considering how the Buccaneers have handled Jones in his time with them.

One of the things I remember about Vaughn is how good he was said to be at pass protection coming out of college and I believe that will help him get out on the field. See if any owners have given up on him and are looking to get out for very little. You can also use the re-signing of Brady and the potential of Fournette returning for another year to “buy low” on Vaughn. Either way, I expect at most they’ll keep one of the three current running backs on the roster. There’s also a low chance that they sign a long-term deal, and I’d expect if anything Fournette comes back on a one-year deal. You can use this window as a chance to buy low on Vaughn.

Lynn Bowden Jr., WR, Miami Dolphins

Lynn Bowden Jr. is a versatile player that played wide receiver and quarterback in college. Will Fuller and Albert Wilson are possibly leaving Miami in free agency so Bowden could see an increased role in the offense. With Mike McDaniel taking over as head coach in Miami coming from San Francisco there is a chance he uses Bowden in a role similar to Deebo Samuel and giving him rushing attempts. During his time in college as a quarterback, he was an excellent rusher and put up some incredible rushing numbers. If he is used in the running game enough there might even be a chance for him to be designated as an RB/WR on some dynasty sites like Cordarrelle Patterson was in 2020. Bowden is currently being rostered in less than 20% of leagues on Sleeper and might be sitting on your waiver wire.

Hunter Long, TE, Miami Dolphins

Now Hunter Long won’t see many opportunities this year with Miami using the franchise tag on Mike Gesicki, but Long could be a player to target with the future in mind especially if your league has a taxi squad. Most tight ends take a few years to get going in the NFL, and if Miami decides to let Gesicki walk after this year Long will be entering his third year and could be ready to take the next step and be the guy in Miami. Long’s size and excellent hands can make him effective in the passing game, especially in the red zone. Similar to Bowden, the Dolphins just need someone else to step up besides Jaylen Waddle. With Miami using the tag on Gesicki, owners might be willing to part with Long for cheap.
