Fantasy-Baseball-Waiver-Wire-Week-4

The 2023 fantasy baseball season is in full swing as we head into Week 4. With that, attacking the waiver wire and getting your bids in is crucial to success in your fantasy baseball leagues. For Week 4, here are some of the top hitters and pitchers you should be targeting on the waiver wire. Continue reading with Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire: Week 4.

We are almost a full month into the season, and we are seeing numerous prospects getting called up, or close to being called up. A lot of injuries so far this season have sent us to the waiver wire. If you missed some of the names from last week, check them out here. I have you covered in the deepest of leagues and shallow leagues, and even some prospects to keep an eye on for a call-up soon.

Waiver Wire Pitchers

Mason Miller, SP, Oakland (Las Vegas?!) Athletics

Mason Miller was the flavor of the week for call-ups. Notably, he has not logged 30 or more innings in the minors, but the Athletics called him up already. In his first start against the Cubs, he only threw 4.1 innings, allowing two runs while striking out five batters. Additionally, he topped 102MPH with his fastball and is well known for his fireball approach.

Personally, he reminds me of Hunter Greene in a way. Miller may be eased into his major league career. He may go five innings tops for a while but may generate a lot of strikeouts. Next week he is lined up as a two-start pitcher against the Angels and Reds.

Johan Oviedo, SP, Pittsburgh Pirates

Johan Oviedo is on the path to a breakout. He has started four games this season and thrown 24.1 innings. In those appearances, he has a 2.22 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, 25 strikeouts, and three quality starts. He lines up as a two-start pitcher next week against the Dodgers and Nationals. Oviedo has a fastball that can top almost 100MPH. In his last start against the Cardinals, he struck out ten batters. He is a must-add in all formats.

Brandon Pfaadt, SP, Arizona Diamondbacks

Brandon Pfaadt is on the verge of being called to the major leagues. With the news of Madison Bumgarner being sent for assignment, a rotation spot has now opened. While no news of a call-up has occurred, Pfaadt is the logical next arm up.

In his last AAA start on Thursday, he threw seven innings of no-run ball and struck out eight batters. All in all, he is known for his strikeout ability and is a must-add off the wire.

Edward Cabrera, SP, Miami Marlins

Edward Cabrera is a very talented pitcher who is on the verge of putting it all together. This season he has struggled with his command with a WHIP of 1.75. Additionally, his ERA is 4.08. His ability to get batters to swing and miss is very good, and a breakout seems close. Furthermore, he has struck out 18 batters in 17.2 innings and is in line for two starts next week against the Braves and Cubs.

His most recent start against the Giants showed us his potential, as he gave up a two-run home run in the first. However, he settled down and was able to throw a quality start. Cabrera is someone you might target on the waiver wire this week in your fantasy baseball leagues.

Griffin Canning, SP, Los Angeles Angels

A blast from the past. Griffin Canning was once a highly sought-after waiver wire pickup a few years ago. Injuries derailed his career a bit, but he is now back with the Angels and has looked very good this season.  He has started two games so far and thrown 10.1 innings. During that time, he has a 3.48 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, and eight strikeouts.

Recently, he threw 100 pitches in his most recent outing against the Yankees where he only allowed two runs and struck out four batters in 5.1 innings. While 100 pitches in five innings aren’t ideal, it shows he’s built up to throw deep into games. We’ll see if he can work through these innings without allowing multiple base runners. Pick him up, his next start is at home against the Athletics.

Kyle Bradish, SP, Baltimore Orioles

Kyle Bradish has started two games this season, pitching 7.2 innings, and has not allowed an earned run so far. He has struck out eight batters and has thrown a quality start. He has a two-start week ahead against the Red Sox and Tigers making him an intriguing deep league add. In his last start off the injured list, he threw six shutout innings against the Nationals, while striking out six.

AJ Puk, RP, Miami Marlins

It appears AJ Puk has the closing role in Miami at this moment. He is up to three saves this season and has a 1.12 ERA with a 0.88 WHIP. He has eight strikeouts in eight innings pitched so far. Puk has always had the prospect pedigree, but injuries have always set him back. That being said, he seems to have found his role now in Miami as a closer and is a must-add if you need saves.

Waiver Wire Hitters

Zachary Neto, SS, Los Angeles Angels

Zachary Neto was the Angels first-round pick last season and rapidly rose through the minors and into the majors. Unfortunately, Neto hasn’t done much since his call up only batting .136 in 22 plate appearances. This year, he has three hits so far. Neto has a high ceiling as a prospect, and it appears the Angels are willing to let him grow in the majors. If you have a need in the middle infield, Neto is a solid addition for an upside play.

Joshua Lowe, OF, Tampa Bay Rays

Joshua Lowe is having a breakout season. He is batting .362 with four home runs and 13 RBIs this season to go with three stolen bases. Additionally, he was initially entering the season in a platoon, and still technically is. However, he is currently operating on the greater side of that platoon. Lowe is becoming a must-add, especially in five-outfielder leagues.

Jorge Soler, OF, Miami Marlins

Jorge Soler started the season hot, got cold, and now is heating up again. So far, he is batting .267 with five home runs and 10 RBIs. While Soler is a few seasons removed from a 48-home run season if he can connect once again, a potential 30 or 40-home run season is not out of the question. Likely? Maybe not, but that’s a pretty good ceiling to try and get off the waiver wire.

Jake Burger, 3B, Chicago White Sox

Jake Burger has been heating up. In 11 games played, he has a .276 batting average, he has hit five home runs and batted in ten RBIs. Right now, he is filling in for Yoan Moncada, so it will be interesting to see how the White Sox play this out. Needless to say, Burger is on a power surge at the moment and is someone who needs to be rostered in deep leagues. Or at least until Moncada returns and there is clarity on playing time.

JD Davis, 3B, San Fransisco Giants

JD Davis has been enjoying a breakout season and revamping his career in San Fransisco. He is currently batting .328 with four home runs and 13 RBIs. At a position as shallow as 3B, Davis has been providing consistency. He was once a breakout candidate with the Mets prior to 2020, and three years later he appears to be doing it again. All that being said, Davis should be added in almost all formats.

Rodolfo Castro, 2B, Pittsburgh Pirates

Rodolfo Castro has been having a good stretch of late for the Pirates. He is batting .300 with two home runs and eight RBIs. Furthermore, his OBP is currently .397. Right now, he is currently filling in for O’Neil Cruz at SS, allowing him to have 2B and SS eligibility on most sites. In deep formats, Castro is a very good addition, especially in the middle infield slot.

Minor League Stash

Matthew Liberatore remains a must-stash in all formats as he continues to dominate. However, I have two new names to this list to be a bit different.

Eury Perez, SP, Miami Marlins

Eury Perez is currently in AA but has been dominant. He threw five shutout innings in his recent start, striking out five. Additionally, he throws high 90 fastballs and has the potential to even skip over AAA if all continues to go well. We saw Mason Miller get called up recently, and the 19-year-old Perez has the potential to be called up early.

Matt Mervis, 1B, Chicago Cubs

Matt Mervis has been crushing it down in AAA and is knocking on the door to the majors. He is known for his power and has the chance to be called up soon for the Cubs. Mervis could hurt your average a bit, but a potential power bat is always intriguing, and he is a must-add if he gets the call soon.

Gavin Stone, RHP, Los Angeles Dodgers

Lastly, there’s a slight chance the Dodgers call up Gavin Stone. He’s someone that needs to be stashed ASAP.
