Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire: Week 6
We are already into May baseball. With the warmer weather comes more hitting. Hopefully. Last week, we saw a handful of solid options on the waiver wire for your fantasy baseball leagues. This week, it will be no different as there are plenty of solid players to consider picking up.
Overall, this season we have seen a handful of prospects getting the major league call-up. This week is no different. Let’s get right into this week’s waiver wire additions for your fantasy baseball teams.
Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire Hitters
Matt Mervis, 1B, Chicago Cubs
Matt Mervis is expected to get called up this weekend for the Cubs. Mervis is a big-name call-up as he is known for his power in the minors. Last season he hit 36 home runs in the minor leagues and 119 RBIs in 137 games. Now, he should play every day between 1B and DH.
While Eric Hosmer and Trey Mancini are splitting 1B reps, I expect Mervis to be an everyday player as the Cubs get a look at their first baseman of the future. Overall, if you need power, he is a must-add in all formats.
Esteury Ruiz, OF, Oakland Athletics
My first player was pure power, now we are going pure speed. Esteury Ruiz has been on this list for numerous weeks, and all he does is continue to steal bases. He started the season off slow and has been heating up as of late. Additionally, he is batting .265 with 13 stolen bases now. On top of that, he had four stolen base nights at one point this season and has been excelling in the leadoff spot for Oakland. Furthermore, he has been putting up multiple stolen base games. Ruiz is a must add especially in category formats.
Brett Baty, 3B, New York Mets
I don’t expect Baty to be a free agent in many leagues, but if he is, he is a must-add all over. Baty is batting .311 since being called up with two home runs and four RBIs. Baty’s playing time started slow once he was called up, but he has been heating up as of late and playing more against lefties and getting everyday playing time. Furthermore, the 3B is a shallow position as it is, but Baty is a must add especially if you’re in need of a third baseman.
Jarren Duran, OF, Boston Red Sox
Jarren Duran is enjoying a breakout fantasy baseball season. Duran struggled in his first few call-ups to the majors, and now he seems to have found his stride. Duran is batting .417 in 17 games played with two home runs and thirteen stolen bases. Additionally, he has four stolen bases to add. Duran is now seeing everyday playing time and is a must-add in all formats, especially with the way he has been playing of late.
CJ Abrams, SS, Washington Nationals
CJ Abrams started off slow, but as of late has been enjoying a mini breakout. Abrams is currently batting .248 but has two home runs to 15 RBIs. Additionally, he has stolen three bases. Abrams is known for his speed, and if he begins to run more, he has 20 or 30 stolen base potential. Also, Abrams hit a clutch grand slam last week against the Mets.
Emmanuel Valdez, 2B, Boston Red Sox
One name flying under the radar right now is Emmanuel Valdez. Valdez appears to have the 2B job for the Red Sox now. He has played nine games and is batting .312 with a home run, five RBIs, and two stolen bases. Furthermore, he has been starting every game for about a week for the Red Sox at 2B, and right now is a great addition in deeper formats. He has shown the ability to hit and steal bases in the MLB. Right now, is a good time to take a chance on Valdez before he breaks out even more, and the rest of your league takes notice.
Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire Pitchers
Bryce Miller, SP, Seattle Mariners
Bryce Miller was called up by Seattle and faced Oakland. He threw six innings striking out ten batters and giving up one run and two hits. Now, Miller faces Houston this weekend and Detroit next week. A very promising debut for Miller is going to make him a very popular waiver addition. Finally, Miller is expected to remain in the starting rotation for the long term making him a must-add in all formats.
Bailey Ober, SP, Minnesota Twins
Bailey Ober was called up earlier this week and was good in his return. He pitched against the Royals and threw 5.2 innings allowing one run and striking out six batters. Furthermore, his next two starts are lined up Friday against Cleveland, and next week against the Padres. If Ober is in the rotation, he lines up as a decent streamer pitcher. However, the Padres will be a tough test for Ober coming up.
Domingo German, SP, New York Yankees
Domingo German was in line for a win in his last start. He ended up going 8.1 innings and allowing just two hits, and one run. Additionally, he struck out six batters until Aaron Boone pulled him, and watched the game fall apart.
While German’s ERA (4.46) is nothing great, he has been very good of late. He is up to 39 strikeouts this season in 34.1 innings pitched and has thrown two quality starts. Overall, he makes for a good addition to your fantasy teams. However, he has matchups against Tampa Bay and Toronto coming up which makes for a couple of tough matchups.
Josiah Gray, SP, Washington Nationals
Josiah Gray has been enjoying a breakout season with the Nationals. He has a 2.67 ERA with a 1.28 WHIP and 31 strikeouts in 33.2 innings. Additionally, he has thrown three quality starts to go along with two wins. This week, he lines up for three great matchups ahead against the Diamondbacks, Giants, and Marlins.
In his last two starts, he faced off against the Pirates and Mets. During that time, he threw 12 combined innings and allowed one run in his last two starts while striking out 15 batters. Overall, Gray may be in the middle of a breakout season here.
Michael King, RP, New York Yankees
While Aaron Boone has come out and supported his closer Clay Holmes, we can’t see the struggles happening. Holmes has a 4.50 ERA this season to go with a 1.60 WHIP. He struggled twice this week leading to speculation that Michael King could eventually take over the closing role. Additionally, King has a 1.56 ERA with a 1.10 WHIP and 20 strikeouts in 17.1 innings.
However, the Yankees have been easing him back into the bullpen and watching his workload on consecutive days. Now with him throwing more, the Yankees could use King more, and potentially even split with Holmes in the 9th. Right now, he is just a speculative add, but if Holmes continues to struggle, the Yankees may have no choice then to switch to King.
Jason Adam, RP, Tampa Bay Rays
Jason Adam could be the new closer for Tampa Bay. With Pete Fairbanks on the 15-day IL now, Adam has the closing role. Additionally, he has a 1.46 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP with 16 strikeouts in 12.1 innings. What’s more, he has recorded two saves so far this season.
Tampa should put Adam with many chances to close games out making him a must-add if you need saves. Unfortunately, he struggled on Thursday closing out the Pirates. However, outside of this game, he has been very reliable.
Minor League Stashes
Christian Encarnacion-Strand, 1B/3B, Cincinnati Reds
Christian Encarnacion-Strand enjoyed a massive breakout night on Thursday night going 3 for 5 with three home runs. He enjoyed a huge breakout Spring with talks of him even breaking with the club.
However, he started the season off in AAA with a back injury, but since being back has begun to hit the ball very well again. This seems like a call-up that could be coming soon, maybe even by June. I would try and add him everywhere I could before the rest of your league takes notice.
Matthew Liberatore, SP, St. Louis Cardinals
Any day right? Matthew Liberatore continues to dominate in the minors. In his last start, he threw six scoreless innings striking out nine batters. The Cardinals rotation has been taking a hit majorly this season, and having Liberatore dominate AAA at this point is doing them no good. Personally, I believe they need to call him up soon. Liberatore is a must-stash on your fantasy baseball squads if you have the space.
