Fantasy-Baseball-Waiver-Wire-Week-9

In fantasy baseball, the waiver wire refers to all available players who are not currently on any team’s roster in your league. The waiver wire is used to make player additions and replacements throughout the season. When a fantasy team owner wants to acquire a player who is currently on the waiver wire, they can put in a waiver claim or a waiver wire request.

As we approach Memorial Day Weekend, we are almost two full months into the season, with tons of baseball ahead of us. We continue to see call-ups happening with Bobby Miller and Gavin Stone, and more are on the horizon. This is the time to stash additional prospects who are close such as Elly De La Cruz and Gavin Williams. Let’s get into the top waiver wire targets for the week in your fantasy baseball leagues.

Waiver Wire Pitchers

Bobby Miller, SP, Los Angeles Dodgers

With Julio Urias and Dustin May both on the IL, Gavin Stone and Bobby Miller both got starts this week. Stone was rocky at his start, which means he could be the odd man out once Urias is back in early June. Miller threw five innings striking out five batters and allowing one run. Additionally, his next start is against Washington which is a favorable matchup at home. Overall, he should be a great streaming option for that matchup.

Brayan Bello, SP, Boston Red Sox

Brayan Bello is starting to put together a string of good starts. In his most recent, he threw seven innings against the Angels and allowed two runs while striking out six batters. Needless to say, a very impressive stat is he did not walk a batter.

Furthermore, his stat line for the season is still 4.08 ERA and 1.44 WHIP. Additionally, he has shown improvements and has 37 strikeouts in 35.1 innings. This week, he lines up against the Reds at home.

Michael Kopech, SP, Chicago White Sox

Michael Kopech had a rough start to the season, but he seems to be heating up. In his most recent start, Kopech threw seven scoreless innings and struck out nine batters against the Guardians. He currently has a 4.24 ERA and 1.22 WHIP, but has 60 strikeouts in 57.1 innings, and has a high ceiling if he can keep this consistent. Last season he had a 3.55 ERA, so you would have to believe that is right around where he should be.

Ben Lively, SP, Cincinnati Reds

Ben Lively is a new name to the waiver wire column. On Wednesday, he threw six innings against the Cardinals while striking out eight batters. He only gave up two runs. On top of that, he has appeared in four games and started two games. Additionally, his ERA is 2.65 and his WHIP is 0.88. Lively could go under the radar on waivers, and lines up to face Boston in Fenway Park next.

Jared Shuster, SP, Atlanta Braves

Jared Schuster was a preseason hype once he started the season, but that hype quickly went away. His stats scream stay away with a 5.49 ERA and 1.42 WHIP, but he pitched against Seattle last weekend and went six innings allowing one run and one hit while striking out seven batters. With Kyle Wright and Max Fried out for the foreseeable future, Schuster should stick in the rotation. He lines up against the Phillies and Athletics next.

Waiver Wire Hitters

Zachary Neto, SS, Los Angeles Angels

Zachary Neto started off his career slow, but as of late has really heated up. Neto is batting .266 with three home runs, 17 RBIs, and two stolen bases. On Wednesday against Boston, he went 3-3 with a home run and three RBIs to go with it. He is hitting in a good lineup and is expected to see numerous chances to bat with runners on base. Neto is a very good addition in deeper formats where a middle infield spot is required.

Lane Thomas, OF, Washington Nationals

Lane Thomas is having an under-the-radar season and needs to be rostered far more than 50%. He is batting .293 with seven home runs, 25 RBIs, and four stolen bases. His On Base Percentage is .345. He crushed it in the month of May, batting over .300 and looking like a solid fantasy addition. If you play in five outfield formats, this is a must-add.

Mickey Moniak, OF, Los Angeles Angels

Another Angel makes the list. Mickey Moniak has been red hot this month. He is batting .419 with four home runs and seven RBIs. He has two stolen bases. Moniak has seen time leading off in this lineup. And with 31 at-bats at the moment, he is hitting over .400. With Taylor Ward struggling, we could see Moniak increase his playing time as time goes on, and possibly even take over the majority of playing time.

Paul DeJong, SS, St. Louis Cardinals

Paul DeJong has been on a hot streak for the Cardinals. He is batting .291 on the season with eight home runs and 18 RBIs. He has three stolen bases as well. Is this real?

He batted .157 last season in 77 games, and .197 in 2021. DeJong seems like a sell-high option, but he just continues to hit and shows no sign of slowing down. If he’s available on the waiver wire, grab him while you can. If you see the batting average drastically drop then it would be time to try and trade or just cut bait.

Owen Miller, 1B, Milwaukee Brewers

Owen Miller is a new name to the waiver wire column. Miller is batting .346 with four home runs and 11 RBIs. He has five stolen bases as well. Deservedly so, he has seen time in the cleanup spot for the Brewers.

Furthermore, he is red hot in May and needs to be rostered if you have a corner infield need or just an open spot in general on your roster. It seems as if he is an everyday player, and right now is offering five tool category potential.

Minor League Waiver Wire Stashes

Elly De La Cruz, SS, Cincinnati Reds

Elly De La Cruz is close. So close that when he got a rest day in the lineup in AAA on Wednesday everyone assumed he was being promoted. Elly has true 5 category first-round fantasy upside. Especially playing in the Great American ballpark. Stash stash stash!  He and Christian Encarnacion-Strand are two very exciting Reds prospects. Furthermore, Cruz has the 30/30 potential that is so rare in the majors to accomplish.
Gavin Williams, SP, Cleveland Guardians
Gavin Williams should be close to the majors. He has been dominant in AAA in his three starts posting a 1.13 ERA and 16 strikeouts. Additionally, his WHIP is a 0.81. Williams is in a tough spot as Trisiton McKenzie and Aaron Civale are coming back soon. However, if Williams continues this dominance, it’ll be very hard to keep him in AAA with nothing to prove. Stash him while you can.
