Fantasy Football Metrics – Week 10

Time to Panic on Tony Pollard?

The Texas-Coast Offense leaves a bit to be desired at times. Especially, it seems, in the running game. Despite gaudy usage numbers, Tony Pollard is suffering in this system. As a result, his fantasy football metrics have been down this year.

Heading into the 2023 season, with Ezekiel Elliott out of the way, hopes, nay, expectations were extremely high for Pollard who had been highly efficient in past seasons. It was widely accepted that with an increase in total opportunities, that efficiency would suffer slightly. But the increase in usage would more than make up for it. That is what had Pollard drafted at the top of the second round as the eighth overall running back this summer.

D-PAC & Backfield Usage

My how wrong the fantasy community was. Midway through the season, Pollard is absolutely getting first dibs at running back opportunities with a dominant 71.56% of the total offensive snaps and 67.69% Opportunity Share.

Unfortunately, the efficiency is much worse than we could have imagined. His fantasy points per snap is 0.24 and currently ranks 55th among his fellow rushers. His 92.9 total fantasy points ranks 21st, while Pollard’s 10.7 median fantasy points ranks 22nd and his 3.96 Consistency Score (CS) is 18th. Additionally, in four out of the last five games played, Pollard has scored single-digit fantasy points. When your RB1 is consistently not breaking double-digit fantasy points you simply cannot win championships.

Looking ahead, the schedule does not help Pollard either. Not just in Week 10. However, for the entire eight remaining weeks in the fantasy football season the Cowboys only play one team ranked in the Top-10 in D-PAC versus the running back position (the Buffalo Bills in Week 15).

For what it’s worth, rookie Deuce Vaughn has been virtually non-existent, with just 40 yards on 20 carries on the year. He’s been a dissappointment for dynasty managers who drafted him last year.

Don’t let Pollard hurt your team anymore. Package him with another player in a deal to upgrade and open up a spot to go after someone on waivers. Do it as early as you can, while the name Tony Pollard might still inspire hope that he will turn it around.
