Quarterbacks
Start ‘Em
Jimmy Garoppolo, San Francisco 49ers
It looks like we’re back in the Jimmy Garoppolo being a serviceable NFL quarterback groove. Through his three starts, he’s averaging 17 completions for 234 yards and a touchdown, which is nothing to blow your doors off with, but solid numbers. He faces a Falcons defense this week that’s giving up nearly 20 fantasy points per game and a second-highest D-PAC Score of 16.71, making it a week to start Garoppolo.
Kirk Cousins, Minnesota Vikings
If you’re looking for a quarterback that is lined up for a fabulous fantasy day, look no further. Kirk Cousins heads to Miami to throw down against a defense that has surrendered the second most fantasy points to the position in 2022 while also giving up 285.6 passing yards per game. If you’re teetering between choices at quarterback, lean toward the guy who will put up a top-six performance in Week 6 and that’s Cousins.
Sit ‘Em
Matt Ryan, Indianapolis Colts
As if you really need a reason to sit Matt Ryan, enter the Jacksonville Jaguars. Ryan has been struggling mightily over the start of this season, but the Jaguars have been dominant against opposing quarterbacks. The Jaguars are only allowing 12 points per game to quarterbacks and a second-lowest D-PAC score of 2.33. You can sit and drop Matt Ryan.
Russell Wilson, Denver Broncos
All fantasy managers who thought that Russell Wilson would re-emerge as a star quarterback in Denver need to take a step back. He’s thrown only four touchdowns through five games while averaging just 228.5 passing yards per game. Until he proves that he’s still got it, we all need to relegate him to the bench. I’d start any of the three players we’ve already mentioned in this article over Wilson this week.
Running Backs
Start ‘Em
A.J. Dillon, Green Bay Packers
For those of us that have been rolling with A.J. Dillon in our lineups, it hasn’t been what we were hoping for. Fear not, our hopes will be rewarded this week against the Jets. The Packers will have the opportunity this week to lean on the ground game. The Jets have been in the middle of the pack against rushing attacks this season. After a disappointing loss across the pond, they’ll be looking to enact some revenge against the other New York team in Week 6.
Melvin Gordon, Denver Broncos
I might be tempting fate here, but I’m going to go with Melvin Gordon for the second week in a row. He saw over 50% of snaps, with 15 rushing attempts and three targets in the passing game. The Broncos face the Chargers this week, who are giving up 32 points per game to running backs. If this Broncos offense can finally find itself, I expect Gordon owners to be the beneficiary.
Sit ‘Em
Najee Harris, Pittsburgh Steelers
Welcome to my spicy take of the week! This Pittsburgh offense has not looked good and Harris seems to be trending in the wrong direction. It was garbage time, but Harris didn’t even see the field in the fourth quarter against the Bills. He has another daunting matchup this week with the Bucs who are only giving up 16 points per game to running backs and a third-lowest D-PAC score of 6.17. If you can, try to sit Harris this week.
Cam Akers, Los Angeles Rams
We all wanted to see Cam Akers return from his Achilles injury and break the mold of previous ball carriers to suffer the same fate. Despite the usage and faith of his coaches, it’s not happening. Akers is averaging just 2.96 YPC so far and has shown no sign of reaching his previous stature. The Rams keep funneling him the ball but it’s not amounting to anything worth a fantasy start. Even against the Panthers’ defense that allowed three running back scores in Week 5, I’m out, and you should be too.

Wide Receivers
Start ‘Em
Alec Pierce, Indianapolis Colts
I’m all in on this rookie receiver who has averaged 80.5 receiving yards over the last two games. Alec Pierce has 60 more receiving yards on one fewer catch than Michael Pittman over the last four contests. In the last two games, he’s caught 12 balls against Pittman’s eight. Not only are you prioritizing adding this receiver, but you’re also going to start him this week.
George Pickens, Pittsburgh Steelers
One bright note to take from the Steelers blowout loss to the Bills was that Kenny Pickett looked good against a strong Bills defense. George Pickens was obviously Pickett’s go-to receiver and had a decent day. The Bucs are giving up 32 points per game to receivers and with it going to be tough trying to run against the Bucs, the Steelers should be passing a lot.
Sit ‘Em
Curtis Samuel, Washington Commanders
Curtis Samuel started the season off pretty well, but his production has been steadily declining since then. He’s still leading the team in targets, but not doing much with those targets averaging only 4.5 yards depth of target. He’s also not seeing the touches in the running game he was getting at the start of the year. He’s also facing a Bears defense that is giving up less than 30 points per game to receivers.
Christian Kirk, Jacksonville Jaguars
After a hot start, things have taken a sharp turn in the other direction for Christian Kirk in the last couple of weeks. He’s only caught three of 12 passes since hauling in six catches in each of the first three games. The hosting Colts are also allowing the fewest fantasy points to wide receivers alongside the ninth-toughest D-PAC score.
Tight Ends
Start ‘Em
Taysom Hill, New Orleans Saints
Taysom Hill will assuredly be one of the hottest waiver wire pickups this week. While it’s quite unlikely he produces four touchdowns again, he’s been a rather solid tight end stream with five rushing scores in three of his four games played. The fact that he’s also utilized as a passer from time to time gives him an extra bump in value. The sheer usage of him on gadget-type plays makes him intriguing week after week.
Zach Ertz, Arizona Cardinals
I don’t think there is another player quietly having as good of a year as Zach Ertz. He’s top five in the league for consistency score and being targeted a ton. The Seahawks are also giving up a league-worst 26 points per game to tight ends. Ertz is a very strong start this week.
Sit ‘Em
Kyle Pitts, Atlanta Falcons
Disappointed Kyle Pitts owners (myself included) had the easy decision to bench Pitts last week with the injury designation. This week it is a bit harder because how can you sit Pitts? However, he has not seen the usage, has not had the production, and things will get worse this week against the 49ers. The 49ers are giving up less than 5 points per game to tight ends and a league-low D-PAC versus tight ends score at 1.13. No one will judge you if you put Pitts on the bench again this week.
George Kittle, San Francisco 49ers
George Kittle hasn’t scored a touchdown since Week 12 of 2021 and hasn’t surpassed 47 receiving yards since Week 14 of that same year. Before last week, he had topped out at 29 yards in that span. The 49ers don’t need Kittle’s playmaking ability to win games as they are content with his run-blocking ability as a tight end. At this point, we can’t count on Kittle anymore.
