There are three things we can count on in life; death, taxes, and bad weather in Chicago at least one week a season…Probably. That was the case last week when a proverbial monsoon ransacked the Windy City. Needless to say, the offenses there sputtered, with ball security a minor issue in the first half. Around the league, several games ran into chances of storms, but we didn’t have anything with a higher impact than the 49ers/Bears, which we hope to avoid this week for the Bears. As for the 49ers, you might not like the news I will drop in this bit. Sorry in advance!

Thursday Night Football

Los Angeles Chargers vs Kansas City Chiefs (-4)

O/U – 54.0

For this week’s Thursday Night Football matchup, the current forecast remains on track to keep this game on the dry side, which is great, because there might be no better track-meet than this one, on paper. Considering the high-pacing environment these two teams thrive in, this should help keep the game flow steady and the scoring plenty as Vegas is alluding to.

A disturbance will be pressing eastward through Kansas with storms likely on a line from Amarillo up into the north-central plains of Kansas. Considering the pressure gradient pattern ahead of the storm, looking a bit breezy prior to the game, so tailgaters, be sure to keep things secure to prevent blowing around. South-southwest winds of 15-20 mph with gusts around 20-25 mph prior to kick off, slowly subsiding by the beginning of the game, but still seeing gust potential linger through the contest with winds of 10-15 mph fairly common all game long.

What does that mean for game impact? Well, we will consider the alignment for Arrowhead is southeast to northwest. For southerly winds, that means we’ll have a crosswind component to contend with. Now, it’s not like the crazy wind we see in the Great Lakes locales in the fall where uprights are bent out of shape, along with kickers. This is something each kicker should have a handle on as long as they play the wind correctly. As for the temperatures, this time of year remains on the warm side, which is good for ball travel. If you are kicking into the north endzone, you’ll have a wind component at your back, so that will be the side you want to see the more long-distance kicks play to. Both quarterbacks have great arms, so this shouldn’t be a problem for Mahomes or Herbert on the deep ball. Looking forward to seeing this one!

Weather Score (Out of 10): 8

Sunday Afternoon Contests (1 EDT/Noon CDT Starts)

Looking at the weather pattern for the early slate of games actually doesn’t look too bad. We have high pressure pretty much dominating the country east of the Rockies with a little disturbance ripping through New England. The good news on that front (no pun intended) is the New England game will be in Pittsburgh where conditions should remain dry through the game. Pretty low-key forecast here with highs in the 70s and 80s in all locations. All game plans should remain normalized with little weather impact. Now let’s get to the elephant in the room.

*Sunday Evening Contests (425 EDT/325 CDT Starts)

The west coast weather pattern will be in the midst of an initial brunt of a system that will be digging down the Pacific coast. Current long-range guidance insists on a narrow band of moisture that will be pressing south to north off the Pacific with eyes on, you guessed it, San Francisco. Now, the timing of this setup will be key. If the disturbance holds off for 2-4 hours, we may see impact focused later in the game. If it speeds up or remains on track, it looks like another rough setup for the 49ers and their opponent the Seahawks. Considering both these teams play a slog in terms of pace, this doesn’t bode well for fantasy prospects, outside of the defenses.

The current forecast is rain through the afternoon with temperatures stuck in the 50s and 60s throughout the day. This will limit the passing ability of both quarterbacks and a much heavier focus will be on the ground game. Hopefully, we can avoid the slop-fest, but current prospects are not looking too good at the moment.

As for the remainder of the evening slate, it will likely remain rain-free or confined to a dome environment. Little to no impact will be felt in these contests as normalized game planning will be sufficient and alterations to play style will not be contingent on weather impacts.

*Sunday night and Monday night contests will be addressed in the final weather report on Saturday.
