Risers

J.D. McKissic – 45 to 42

It’s not a huge rise, but J.D. McKissic did boost his CS and running back ranking with his Week 6, 110 yards from scrimmage on 16 touches, outing. He put up 15 fantasy points and finished the week as the 17th running back. Fellow backfield-mate Antonio Gibson is banged up and his status is not looking promising after suffering a hairline fracture injury but is now listed with a Calf injury. So there could be new issues that contributed to him not being able to finish the game Week 6. That all adds up to a lot more playing time for McKissic who is the clear-cut heir to Gibson.

The timing couldn’t be better for McKissic to step into the role either. With a Week 7 matchup against the Green Bay Packers, McKissic has one of the most desired matchups for the week. The Packers have the third-highest D-PAC score against running backs, 15.53. And even if this game gets out of hand, McKissic has shown that he’s a fixture in the passing attack as well, even when Gibson is healthy. McKissic should be the top option for replacing your stalwart running backs.

Amon-Ra St. Brown – 85 to 77

In a lot of leagues, Amon-Ra St. Brown was a “hot” name last week with fellow Lion, Quintez Cephus joining Tyrell Williams on the injury list.  But even still, he is only rostered in 47% of leagues on Sleeper, so still widely available. St. Brown underwhelmed in production, only gaining 26 yards. But with 23 targets over the last three weeks, he ranks 20th among all receivers over that time frame. He’s still a clear “add” option to get through this week, as lean as it is.

The matchup in Los Angeles against the Rams doesn’t seem positive. But in all actuality, it’s not that bad. The Rams are allowing an average of 39.50 fantasy points per game to the receiver position which ranks 13th. And they have the highest D-PAC score against the position in the NFL. So it is a really safe bet that they give up just under 40 fantasy points to the position. The Lions aren’t likely to hit that mark, but St. Brown has almost no competition for those receiver fantasy points. So, in a pinch, fire him up in your starting lineups.

Fallers

Jamaal Williams – 25 to 33

To start the season, both Lions backfield members D’Andre Swift and Jamaal Williams looked like they could be playable. But as of late, Williams hasn’t sniffed at fantasy relevance.  He hasn’t hit double-digit fantasy points since Week 3 and bottomed out last week putting up only 1.4 fantasy points in 1/2 PPR. A big reason for Williams’ fantasy skid mark? A big lack of targets.  In Week 1, Williams recorded eight receptions on nine targets for 56 yards. In the five games combined since then, he’s recorded almost the exact same line of eight receptions on nine targets for only 43 yards.

While the matchup isn’t bad for fellow Lion Amon-Ra St. Brown above, it’s not so good for the running game.  The Rams D-PAC score of 9.52 vs RBs is 19th and their 23.57 average fantasy points allowed also ranks 19th.  There isn’t much of a chance the Lions hang with the LA Rams offense and are going to have to throw the ball a LOT to compete in this game. Especially since running it isn’t likely to be successful. And as I just detailed out, that just isn’t how this offense is using Jamaal Williams. If at all possible, you should look elsewhere when trying to fill that RB slot in Week 7.

DeVonta Smith – 48 to 54

It has always been hard to trust rookie receivers. All this season it has been hard to trust any Eagles offensive player not named Jalen Hurts. Those two things make DeVonta Smith a hard fantasy football asset to trust. Sure, the rookie has had a couple promising games. In week 1 he notched 71 yards and a touchdown on six receptions. Week 4, even more promising against the Kansas City Chiefs, he caught seven of 10 targets for 122 yards. He followed that up with a respectable seven of nine for 77 yards. However, in the other three games of the season, he failed to even reach five fantasy points in 1/2 PPR scoring formats.

His 0.68 CS ranks 54th among receivers. Lower than players like Rondale Moore, K.J. Osborn, Mecole Hardman, and Jaylen Waddle. The difference is DeVonta Smith is pretty clearly the teams’ number one receiver. Yet he hasn’t had a single top-12 fantasy performance on the year. He’s been a WR2 33% of games played, a WR3 in 17% of games, and outside the top-48 in 50% of games this season. He’s simply not playable despite his status on the depth chart.

Considering the Philadelphia Eagles travel to the desert to take on the Oakland…I mean, Las Vegas Raiders in Week 7 certainly doesn’t help Smith. The Raiders rank 27th in D-PAC versus wide receivers, 10.93, and their 31.77 average points allowed to the position rank 26th. I know pickings are slim, but I would still be trying to find another option.

Stream of the Week

Mac Jones – Rostered in 35% of Leagues

Mac Jones is having a quietly good rookie season. Okay, maybe not for fantasy purposes. His CS is only 6.39 (21st) and he hasn’t finished as a QB1 in any games. But he’s been living comfortably in the QB2 range, finishing 67% of games played between 13th and 24th. His 71.1% completion rate is the best among all 2021 rookies and 5th best among all quarterbacks (with 10 or more attempts).  Surprisingly, the New England Patriots are letting him sling the ball around too. His 211 pass attempts are the 12th most in this young season.

For Week 7, when you might really need that plug-and-play to fill in, with studs like Josh Allen, Dak Prescott, Trevor Lawrence, Justin Herbert, Kirk Cousins, and Ben Roethlisberger (…Okay maybe not Big Ben) all riding the bench, Jones gets the best matchup possible for a rookie. The Jets.

The Jets are currently allowing a 69.2% completion rate, the 6th highest in the NFL. They haven’t had a single interception on the year and are currently allowing a 97.1 quarterback rating against them.  This defense shouldn’t intimidate anyone. Jones should be a perfectly solid substitute in Week 7 to get you through the bye-pocalypse.
