Fantasy Football Week 9 Consistency Corner
With a mini fantasy football BYE-pocolypse coming up in Week 9, the savvy manager is going to be able to take full advantage of their league-mates who have already fallen asleep at the wheel. The Detroit Lions, Seattle Seahawks, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Washington Football Team are all resting this week. Some of those teams have bigger fantasy implications than others. But all of them have players that were clearly secured in your starting lineups. So let’s take a look at some players whose consistency score (CS) shows they can step up to fill in or should stay on the waiver wire or your bench. Check it all out here in Fantasy Football Week 9 Consistency Corner.

Fantasy Football Consistency Risers
Boston Scott – 80 to 66
When the Miles Sanders news came out everyone, including yours truly, rushed to the waiver wire to drop big chunks of FAAB on Kenneth Gainwell with the idea he steps into the No.1 role. Me oh my was the fantasy football community wrong on that one. Boston Scott instead was the man who stepped up, played 45% of the offensive snaps, tied Gainwell with 13 opportunities, and led the backfield group with 60 yards rushing and two touchdowns.

His Week 8 18 point performance was enough to raise his CS from 0.42 to 0.98. Don’t get me wrong, that is still horrible. But if we calculated his CS from just the past two games, his CS would skyrocket to 4.06 which would rank 22nd. It’s apparent that Scott is the biggest beneficiary of Sanders’ absence and is a viable option in positive matchups.
Week 9 is a bit of a mixed bag when it comes to a matchup. The Los Angeles Charges D-PAC score of 9.58 ranks 17th. But their average points allowed to the position, 27.47, is the fifth most. The reason for this discrepancy is their floor of only 10 points allowed comes from an impressive Week 4 performance when they chocked the Las Vegas Raiders running game allowing only 48 yards on the ground and no touchdowns. But they’ve also allowed 40+ points to the position twice, against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 2 and the Cleveland Browns in Week 5.
I don’t think Boston Scott and the Eagles are on par with Zeke or Nick Chubb. But if Scott continues in his role of the past two games, he should be a solid flex play to fill in for someone on their bye week.
Chase Claypool – 37 to 33
Chase Claypool hasn’t been the WR1 many in the fantasy football community wanted him to be. It’s been so bad that according to Sleeper, he’s only being started on around 50% of teams where he is rostered. But he should be a viable fill-in if you have been leaning on a Mike Evans or Chris Godwin this season.
In Week 8 Claypool played his highest snap percentage on the season, 97%, even though he only saw 5 targets. He is just under Diontae Johnson on the season in terms of offensive snaps, so he’s the clear number two receiver for the team. He’s shown a lovely ceiling of 21.5 fantasy points from Week 5 but has seemed cemented in the 8-10 point range.
Week 9 against the Chicago Bears is hopeful though. The Bears D-PAC score of 17.82 vs receivers is the 10th highest in fantasy football. And their 41.51 average points allowed to the position ranks fifth in the NFL. The Bears 12.6 yards-per-reception allowed is also the fifth highest in the league. Claypool meanwhile is averaging 15.5 yards-per-reception, the 22nd highest in the league among receivers with 15+ targets.
Fantasy Football Consistency Fallers
Kenneth Gainwell – 40 to 45
Well if Boston Scott is a riser, Kenneth Gainwell has to clearly be slipping down the ranks. Not only did Scott see an increased role, but Jordan Howard came back into the fold to record 12 rush attempts and further relegate Gainwell to obscurity.
Whereas I’m not sure why the lack of opportunities for Gainwell sans Sanders, it doesn’t really matter. Averaging only 3.8 yards-per-carry, the lowest among the teams’ running backs, he was a pure volume play as it was. Scott and Howard are going to take the red zone opportunities, and Jalen Hurts is not checking it down to the running back position, so he’s not going to get targets to buoy his fantasy football points either. At this point, Gainwell can be dropped in just about every league.
Matt Ryan – 18 to 24
For a hot second, Matt Ryan seemed like he could be a viable streaming quarterback this season. But with a truly poor performance against the Carolina Panthers and losing Calvin Ridley for who knows how long, I don’t think you can trust Ryan in anything but the most favorable of matchups.
Ryan is averaging only 259 yards-per-game, 1.9 touchdowns-per-game and that’s translated to a truly underwhelming 16.2 fantasy points-per-game. That ranks 23rd among quarterbacks in fantasy football.
None of this is going to get better in Week 9 against the New Orleans Saints. The Saints D-PAC score of 4.58 against the quarterback position is 30th and they allow only 15.19 fantasy points on average to the position. This defense is one of the worst fantasy football matchups for QBs and one you would want to avoid with anyone other than your top players at the position. Ryan can’t be played this week.
Fantasy Football Stream of the Week
Tua Tagovailoa – Rostered in 44% of leagues
Tua Tagovailoa came out with a super slow start in fantasy football, and those first two weeks have kept his CS under five (4.35). But if we just looked at his past three weeks, he’s averaging 21.03 fantasy points-per-week and his CS over that time frame would be 9.83 and rank seventh among all signal-callers.
On the season, he’s averaging 257 passing yards and two touchdowns (in full games played). Over the past three weeks, that’s up to 275 yards and two scores. In Week 9 he gets to play the Houston Texans at home in a lovely fantasy matchup for Tua.
The Texans lay claim to the fourth-highest D-PAC score against quarterbacks, 10.76. And their 20.44 average points allowed ranks as the eighth highest. Tua should have a great Week 9 against this defense who has been giving up big games to quarterbacks regularly.
