4 Wide Receivers to Target in Fantasy Football for Week 9

Each week there are wide receivers that emerge as difference makers for your fantasy football team, whether in your starting lineup or as valuable depth. Choosing the correct players at this volatile position on a weekly basis is a necessary skill on the path to a fantasy football championship. These wide receivers highlighted below have a combination of positive matchups and game scripts, opportunities for targets, and the skill to help you win your Week 9 matchup. Continue reading to check out my 4 wide receivers to target for the week.

Josh Downs, WR, Indianapolis Colts

With QB Joe Flacco back in the fold, Josh Downs is primed to be a valuable fantasy commodity for the rest of the season. In the three games that Flacco has been the main quarterback, Downs has averaged 19.2 PPR points which would be a WR6 overall pace. Now, the North Carolina product now faces a tough Vikings defense. Notably, they’ve allowed the most points to the WR position and have struggled against slot wide receivers. And that’s just what Downs plays.

Downs is my start of the week in my Week 9 WR Rankings and should provide high-end WR2 value this week. Ultimately, Downs should be in fantasy lineups across the board and is a player I’m looking to target ahead of Week 9.

Courtland Sutton, WR, Denver Broncos

Denver Broncos WR Courtland Sutton had his best game of the year last week, including season highs in receptions and receiving yards. The veteran wide receiver has been a beneficiary of rookie quarterback Bo Nix‘s continued improvement.  Nix now has multiple passing touchdowns in three of his past four games and Sutton remains his top target.

Sutton faces a Baltimore Ravens defense that’s allowed the second most points to fantasy wide receivers. The Broncos are currently tied for the biggest underdogs on the week, per DraftKings. As a result, they will need to throw to keep up with Baltimore’s explosive offense. Overall, I like Sutton as a solid WR2 option to target in Week 9. More importantly, he’s a good rest-of-season trade target with Nix’s development.

Christian Watson, WR, Green Bay Packers

Christian Watson has struggled with injuries this season. However, he may have a chance to turn that around in Week 9. The NDSU product saw his most targets of the season last week and ran more the double the amount of routes than fellow WR Dontayvion Wicks. With Watson getting healthy and QB Jordan Love back at practice after an injury, we could start to see the big plays coming soon.

Furthermore, the Packers take on the Detroit Lions this week. They have allowed the third most fantasy points per game to wide receivers. Recently, they just gave up over 100 yards to Calvin Ridley in the first quarter alone. Watson is a WR3 for me this week and someone who could be available after a rough start to the season. Target Watson ahead of this Week 9 matchup.

Jalen Coker, WR, Carolina Panthers

Rookie Jalen Coker had the best performance of his young career on Sunday for the Carolina Panthers. The Holy Cross product proved to be a bright spot in the absence of Diontae Johnson and Adam Thielen due to injury. With Johnson having been traded this week and Thielen still working his way back from injury, Coker should continue to see targets from a quarterback he’s shown chemistry with in Bryce Young.

This week, Coker takes on a Saints defense that’s allowing fantasy points to wide receivers. Not to mention, at a top-10 rate. Additionally, he will operate primarily out of the slot where the Saints have allowed the third most receiving yards to slot WRs, per Fantasy Points.

The Panthers currently have the worst record in the league and will need to throw to keep up in this one. Ultimately, I like Coker as a solid WR3/WR4 who may be available off of the waiver wire in your league and should be a priority target heading into Week 9.
