Finding The Next Dak Prescott – 2022 NFL Draft

Dak Prescott was drafted in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL draft by the Dallas Cowboys. He became the starting quarterback and is now a top 10  quarterback in fantasy. So who is the next Prescott, a third-round or later quarterback that will become a fantasy star?

Is it, Desmond Ridder or Matt Corral? Nope. Well, then it’s got to be Malik Willis who was projected to be a first-round pick by many but fell to the third round, right? Wrong again. It is none other than Sam Howell. That’s right, a fifth-round pick by the Washington Commanders.

Howell was a three-year starter at North Carolina and possesses more than adequate height, weight, and hand size. He had a completion percentage of over 60% all three years as well as fewer than 10 interceptions each year. He threw for over 3,000 yards every year which is something that Pickett, Ridder, Corral, and Willis could not accomplish. Pickett, Ridder, Corral, and Willis have just five 3,000-yard seasons combined!

He also has more passing touchdowns than any one of them. Howell produced right out the gate as a freshman, something most of these quarterbacks were not able to accomplish.

Now let’s talk about Howell’s rushing ability. In his junior season his rushing attempts, yards, and touchdowns shot way up for a rushing line of 183-828-11. He had double-digit rush attempts in every game of his junior season with 98 or more rushing yards in seven games. So he will provide rushing upside to go along with his abilities as a passer in fantasy. Next, I’ll get into his chances of becoming a starter in the NFL and what needs to happen for that to be possible.

Currently, Carson Wentz is the main thing standing in Howell’s way to becoming the starter. Wentz hasn’t looked too impressive in the last four seasons and at times he’s looked downright bad. This has led to him being traded twice in the past two years. If Wentz doesn’t improve his play and impress the Washington Commanders this season they have an out in his contract in 2023 with a $0 dead cap which makes it pretty easy to move on from him. I believe that Howell will impress the coaching staff and show that he provides more upside than Wentz. Also, we have seen over the last decade or so how beneficial it is for a team to have a quarterback on a rookie deal.
