Fantasy Football Outlook: Many have pegged a free agent tight end to the Bengals and it’s Irv Smith who found a new home. This fills the hole left by Hayden Hurst, who signed with the Carolina Panthers.
The former 2019 second-round pick has been riddled with injuries. Before this, Smith showed some promise in his career as he played in all 16 games in his rookie year, catching 36 balls for 311 yards and two touchdowns. Additionally, his 2020 year looked fantastic as he had a career year with 365 receiving yards and five touchdowns.
However, he has only played in eight games since 2020. Missing the whole 2021 season where he tore his meniscus in the preseason finale at Kansas City. Furthermore, Smith missed nine games in 2022 with a high-ankle sprain.
As of now, Smith is the TE1 on the Bengals, but more of the fourth option at best behind Ja’Marr Chase, Tee Higgins, and Tyler Boyd. Furthermore, tight ends in Cincinnati haven’t finished better than TE21 over the last two seasons. With that said Smith is nothing more than a late-round pick in best ball.
In your dynasty leagues, don’t go out of your way and acquire him. However, if you’re able to pick up players right now, there’s an off-chance he might be on the waiver wire in deeper leagues. Overall, don’t expect too much out of Smith for fantasy purposes.
