JuJu Smith-Schuster Dynasty Outlook

0

Since the trade of Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins, JuJu Smith-Schuster stands atop the depth chart at wide receiver.  What fantasy impact will this have on Smith-Schuster and the Chiefs’ offense as well as their ability to remain the No. 1 team in the AFC West? In this article, I will answer these questions starting with Juju’s fantasy outlook.

JuJu Smith-Schuster

Smith-Schuster seemed to be left for dead by many in the fantasy community before the Kansas City Chiefs signed him and resurrected his fantasy life. It was not that long ago that Juju was being considered by many as a top 5 wide receiver in dynasty and the next big thing.

Then Antonio Brown left town and Juju failed to live up to the hype and show that he can be a true number one wide receiver. While he’s not a true number one I do think he can be a great number two wide receiver or even a really good 1b to another wide receiver like he was to Antonio Brown.

Will the Chiefs Draft a Wideout?

Now the Chiefs have two picks in the first round and I believe they will take a wide receiver with one of those picks. With Travis Kelce, the recent signing of Marquez Valdes-Scantling, and a wide receiver from this draft, Smith-Schuster won’t be asked to carry the pass-catching workload all by himself.

Between Patrick Mahomes throwing him the ball and the threat of Kelce, Smith-Schuster should have plenty of opportunities to make plays. There is no reason he can’t finish as a high-end WR2 this season. While signing with the Chiefs is great for Juju’s value it is only a one-year deal and who knows where he will end up next year. This makes his long-term value in dynasty difficult to determine.

Chiefs Offense

Tyreek Hill getting traded was a big blow to the Chiefs’ offense and the additions of Smith-Schuster and MVS are not enough to make up for the impact Hill had on this offense. Without Hill, I think we will see fewer of those big pass plays downfield from Mahomes that we saw so frequently the past few years.

This may cause the offense to lean more on Kelce and result in him having a career-high in targets. Although defenses will likely focus more on stopping Kelce he should see more targets and will be the number one option in the offense, and once again finishing as a top 2 TE for the seventh straight season.

AFC West Outlook

The AFC West is arguably the toughest division in the NFL. The Raiders, Chargers, and Broncos have all made BIG moves to improve their team as they try and take the number one spot from the Chiefs. Las Vegas traded for Davante Adams and signed Chandler Jones, Chargers traded for Khalil Mack and re-signed Mike Williams, and Broncos traded for Russell Wilson and signed Randy Gregory.

While the Chiefs added Juju and Marquez Valdes-Scantling they also traded away one of their best players in Tyreek Hill and will likely lose Tyrann Mathieu as well. The Chiefs will not have as easy of a time winning this division as they have the last few years. The gap between the Chiefs and the rest of this division has closed significantly.
