Marvin Mims Jr. – 2023 Fantasy Football Outlook
Wide Receiver – Oklahoma
5’10” 183 lbs
2nd Round – 32nd Pick (63rd Overall) – Denver Broncos
Marvin Mims Jr. is a speedy and agile wide receiver. In the 2023 NFL Draft, he was drafted 63rd overall in the second round by the Denver Broncos. He finished his career at the University of Oklahoma with 54 catches, 1,083 yards, and 6 touchdowns. Additionally, Mims was named first-team All Big-12 and led the Sooners in receiving all three years he was there. Notably, he’s one of just four draft-eligible receivers to average better than 19.5 yards per catch for his career.
Mims’ greatest strengths include his ability to stretch the field as a deep ball threat. Additionally, he maintains speed while tracking deep balls, and makes difficult catches over his shoulder with great body control. Accordingly, he was the only FBS receiver with 45 or more catches to average more than 20 yards per reception in 2022. He has experience playing both on the outside and in the slot, making him a versatile option for teams. Furthermore, Mims was a first-down machine with a 70.4% first-down rate in 2022. Additionally, Mims is a productive punt returner as well, averaging 11.8 yards per return.
However, his thin frame makes him a smaller target. Mims lacks power, limiting his ability to gain yards after the catch. He can struggle against physical press coverage, which can bump him off his routes, and his route running is only average. While he can make spectacular catches, he may also drop some passes.
Fantasy Football Outlook
Unfortunately, Mims is likely to end up as the fourth receiver on the Broncos’ depth chart, limiting his fantasy football value. However, his home run ability on any given play could make him a sneaky late pick in best ball leagues. On the positive side, quarterback Russell Wilson has been one of the best deep ball threats in the NFL over his career, which is where Mims will shine.
If Tim Patrick was to be out for an extended period, Mims will be able to step right in and take over that production. Additionally, Mims provides value as a punt returner as well if your league scores return yards. Mims will likely go undrafted in your fantasy football leagues but could be someone worth keeping an eye on the waiver wire for this year.
Dynasty Outlook
Mims is currently fourth on the Broncos’ depth chart. He sits behind Jerry Jeudy, Courtland Sutton, and Tim Patrick. While Sutton and Patrick are locked up for multiple years, trade rumors have been swirling about Jeudy. If Jeudy gets traded, Mims has a chance to step into a larger role, likely in the slot. While he may not see much playing time right away, his deep ball ability and versatility could make him a valuable asset in the future.
In conclusion, Mims is a great target in the third round of rookie drafts for dynasty fantasy football leagues and could be a valuable stash on your taxi squad. Eventually, he has the talent to develop into a premier deep ball threat in the NFL. The Broncos used a second-round pick on Mims, which signals they have a plan for him moving forward. Don’t expect a ton of production right away, but Mims is worth looking at in the third round or so in your dynasty rookie drafts.
