Latest NFL Rumors
Could Jahmyr Gibbs go in the first round?
Longtime NFL Insider Peter King believes a team like the Miami Dolphins could trade into the back of the first round to draft Alabama RB Jahmyr Gibbs.
Gibbs is a tier behind Bijan Robinson at devalued running back position in the NFL. However, this is not an NFL Draft full of big-time skill position players on offense, which means there is a market for Gibbs for teams late in the first round.
Look for teams that include the Eagles, Chiefs, Cowboys, Bengals, and Vikings to be in the running back business in the draft. But other clubs like the Dolphins and Saints could also be in the mix for Gibbs’ services if they trade into the first.
All of the aforementioned teams have a need for a running back, especially one with Gibbs’ explosive, pass-catching skillset. –4/25/23 by Anthony Cervino (@therealnflguru)
Cowboys exercise WR CeeDee Lamb’s fifth-year option
Dallas Cowboys beat writer Calvin Watkins is reporting that the team picked up WR CeeDee Lamb‘s fifth-year option.
The Cowboys exercising Lamb’s club option was always the outcome. He is slated to make $17.9 million in guaranteed money in 2024 before he hits NFL Free Agency. If the Cowboys are smart, they will not let Lamb sniff the open market. Look for the Cowboys to lock the now 24-year-old wideout up long-term sooner rather than later.
Lamb emerged as one of the best wideouts in the NFL last season, which obviously translated to the fantasy football landscape. In his first season as the bona fide Cowboys WR1, Lamb finished as the WR7 in FPPG (17.7 ). –4/21/23 by Anthony Cervino (@therealnflguru)
Could Tom Brady come out of retirement in 2023?
Pro Football Talk is reporting that retired QB Tom Brady avoided directly answering the question when it comes to coming out of retirement to play for the Miami Dolphins.
Here is Brady’s portion of the exchange: “I will say now that I’m not affiliated with any team anymore, even though I have strong ties with a couple of teams, I do have some friends on the Dolphins that I really like. So, I wouldn’t say I necessarily root for them all the time, but I root for my friends to do well, and several of them play for Miami.”
Brady did not say yes, but he also did not say no, leaving the door for all parties involved, including fans and media elite, to keep the Brady unretirement rumors steadily flowing. We should note that Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa did consider retirement this offseason due to a laundry list of recurring injuries, including concussions.
Playing conspiracy theorist, Brady is a candidate to come out of retirement during the 2023 NFL season, rather than ahead of it. Since Brady has ties to numerous teams around the NFL, all it takes is one significant quarterback injury for the unquestioned goat to get the call. And in the right situation, he will answer it.
The Dolphins and 49ers are at the top of the list when it comes to teams Brady could play for should he unretire. Both clubs have loaded rosters that could contend for a Super Bowl if the quarterback situation is right. –4/21/23 by Anthony Cervino (@therealnflguru)
Javonte Williams‘ return to the field in question
Denver Broncos beat writer Chris Tomasson is reporting GM George Paton told reporters that he is uncertain about the timeline for RB Javonte Williams’ (knee) return to football activities.
Williams suffered multiple ligament tears in his knee last season, which makes his return to the field a significant question mark. And although the Broncos signed RB Samaje Perine in NFL Free Agency, there is a notable hole at the running back position otherwise. This puts Denver in the running back business in the upcoming 2023 NFL Draft.
Paton noted that when it comes to Denver’s time to draft, selecting a running back is within the realm of possibilities if one is the best player on the board at that time. Williams’ dynasty managers should plan for a lengthy absence. They should also keep in mind how the J.K. Dobbins injury timeline unfolded last year. We could be staring at a similar situation if the Broncos choose to rush Williams back before his ready. –4/21/23 by Anthony Cervino (@therealnflguru)
Jonathan Taylor is not expected to pursue a new deal before the 2023 season
Colts RB Jonathan Taylor suggested to team reporter James Boyd that he is willing to play the 2023 NFL season on his rookie deal rather than pursuing a new contract.
Taylor is entering the final year of his rookie deal with a base salary of $4.304 million. Rather than making noise to get a new deal ahead of the upcoming campaign, Taylor is betting on himself to bounce back from a regressive, injury-plagued 2022 where he totaled 1,004 yards and four touchdowns on 220 touches, He was the RB37 with 4.6 yards per touch while averaging 4.5 yards per carry, the first time in his career he failed to average at least 5.0 YPC.
Despite his downtick, Taylor still ended 2022 as the RB17 with 13.3 FPPG. But when he is firing on all cylinders, his ceiling is sky-high. In his first two seasons in the NFL, Taylor was the RB8 and RB1 in FPPG respectively.
Paying running backs is something NFL teams do not want to do, but he is only 24. As long as he gets back on track, Taylor will sign a lucrative deal next offseason, or at worst, play on the fully guaranteed franchise tag, assuming the Volts use it on him. –4/20/23 by Anthony Cervino (@therealnflguru)
Tua Tagovailoa considered retiring from the NFL
NFL Network’s Cameron Wolfe has reported that Tua Tagovailoa considered retirement after the 2022 NFL season.
Wolfe reported: “Tua Tagovailoa says he discussed the idea of retiring from football after the season with family but he decided to keep playing. He says this is his health and life. He thinks this is what’s best for him & his family.”
This news comes after Tagovailoa suffered two concussions last season. Both of which, were fairly scary and questionable situations. The Miami Dolphins organization was under a bit of heat last year with these two concussions. Many questioned whether or not he should’ve been cleared to play and if he should’ve been sidelined longer than he had been to recover.
This situation should absolutely be monitored moving forward. Concussions and protecting the players have both been huge topics in recent years around the NFL. If Tagovailoa suffers another concussion in 2023, don’t be surprised if this news resurfaces and he begins to question his future with football. -4/19/23 by Aaron Schill (@aaron_schill)
Will Josh Allen run less in 2023?
Buffalo Bills beat writer Alaina Getzenberg is reporting that Josh Allen implied that he could run less moving forward.
Allen told the reporter that he is “getting older.” He also suggested that he will soon have to be a “quarterback first and a football player second,” contrary to how he’s played the game in his career up to this point. This is not the first hint that Allen could run less in 2023 and beyond. Bills’ brass has suggested that the signal caller must do a better job of protecting his body at different times this offseason.
Furthermore, HC Sean McDermott even said that he doesn’t ” think that’s a healthy way to play quarterback in this league and it’s undefeated that things are going to happen when you play that style,” this of course, refers to how Allen plays the game.
If Allen is going to run less, the Bills must bolster their offensive line, and establish the run while also adding legitimate receiving weapons not named Stefon Diggs. 4/18/23 by Anthony Cervino (@therealnflguru)
Evan Engram is not expected to sign the franchise tag
NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero is reporting that Jaguars TE Evan Engram is not expected to report to the team’s voluntary workouts.
The Jaguars placed the franchise tag on Engram, but he has yet to sign it, which means he can not attend Jacksonville’s voluntary workouts for veteran players. This is not a surprise, however, veterans look for reasons to skip off-season workouts, especially voluntary ones.
Although Engram wants a new contract that exceeds one year like the franchise tag, holding out is an unlikely scenario. Look for Engram to show up to mandatory workouts and training camp when it matters. 4/17/23 by Anthony Cervino (@therealnflguru)
Bryce Young cancels pre-draft visits
NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero is reporting Alabama QB Bryce Young has canceled the rest of his pre-draft visits.
Young has already visited with the Houston Texans and Carolina Panthers before canceling the rest of the visits on his schedule. Since the Panthers and Texans hold the first two picks in the 2023 NFL Draft respectively, it looks like he will be selected by one of those quarterback-thirsty clubs. Young also had spoken to the Las Vegas Raiders, but it would take a lot for them to trade up to get him.
NFL sportsbooks reacted to this news by dramatically shifting the odds for Young to be taken as the No. 1 overall pick. He is -1100 at DraftKings Sportsbook with the market being unlisted at FanDuel Sportsbook. However, he is not a lock to go first overall. C.J. Stroud and Anthony Richardson are also in the mix to land in Carolina. 4/17/23 by Anthony Cervino (@therealnflguru)
Chargers want to target a pass-catcher in the 2023 NFL Draft
Los Angeles Chargers beat writer Jordan Reid is suggesting that the team is “adamant” about selecting a pass-catcher in the early portion of the 2023 NFL Draft.
In theory, the Chargers have a solid group of pass-catchers. But in reality, that is far from the case. Keenan Allen is aging and was in the midst of trade rumors this off-season. He also missed significant time with an injury in 2022. Mike Williams also has issues staying on the field while playing inconsistent football when he is healthy.
Meanwhile, Josh Palmer flashed at times last season when seeing the opportunity, but in the big picture, he is not the long-term answer to start in two-wide sets if need be. We also must consider TE Gerald Everett is entering the final year of his current deal.
Considering the fact that Austin Ekeler is not happy with his current contractual situation and is also getting up there in age, the Chargers are in a scenario where they must refurbish their room of offensive skill position players from top to bottom.
The good thing is that this is a team that perennially has one of the best rosters in the NFL. They can afford to use draft assets to go heavy on positions like running back, wide receiver, and tight end. This is a team that I have mocked Jordan Addison to in the first round of my 2023 NFL Mock Draft. But the Chargers could also select Quentin Johnston or Zay Flowers at No. 21 overall if they indeed target a wideout in the first round.
There are many best landing spots for rookie wide receivers around the NFL, but the Chargers are certainly one of them with Justin Herbert at the helm. -4/16/23 by Anthony Cervino (@therealnflguru)
Budda Baker requests trade
ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that Arizona Cardinals S Buffa Baker has requested a trade.
Per reports, Baker requested a trade in February. He wants to be moved or come to terms on a new contract making him the highest-paid player at his position. The Cardinals have yet to oblige with either of his demands. Baker, who has two years remaining on a contract extension signed in 2020, is owed $ 13 million in 2023. He also draws an $18 million cap hit in 2024.
Baker is the NFL’s seventh highest-paid safety. However, playing for a Cardinals team that is in the midst of a rebuild is not exactly appetizing to this veteran asset. When he initially signed his extension in 2020, the Cardinals looked like a team on the rise, but have since been on a rapid decline.
It would make sense for a team like the Bengals to make a move for Baker. They lost both of their top safeties — Vonn Bell and Jessie Bates — in free agency. But since Baker is already expensive and wants to get a raise, the Bengals should only make this move if they are going the “all-in” route in 2023. In the next two offseasons, they have a lot of notable players who are going to need new deals, including Ja’Marr Chase, Joe Burrow, Tee Higgins, and Trey Hendrickson. -4/16/23 by Anthony Cervino (@therealnflguru)
Broncos trade for Sean Payton
ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that the Denver Broncos have traded a 2023 first-round pick and a 2024 second-round pick to the New Orleans Saints for the rights to former head coach Sean Payton. The Broncos are also getting a third-round pick in 2023 in the trade.
The Broncos wanted to make a splash in the head-coaching department and managed to do so by acquiring Payton. With a top-end defense and offensive assets good enough to contend with the right coach, Payton is the type of head coach who can turn this flailing team around rapidly, as long as he lives up to the hype.-1/31/23 by Anthony Cervino (@therealnflguru)
Texans hire DeMeco Ryans as new head coach
ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that the Houston Texans have hired former 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans as their new head coach. Ryans signed a six-year deal.
The Texans are in the midst of a rebuild. Ryans will get a bare-bones locker room and will not have a lot to work with on the offensive side of the ball. Houston does have some pieces on defense, which is Ryans’ forte. If the Texans give Ryans a fair shot, contrary to what the team gave to David Culley and Lovie Smith, the impending first-year head coach could turn things around.-1/31/23 by Anthony Cervino (@therealnflguru)
Derek Carr, Raiders at a standstill
Raiders beat writer Vic Tafur is reporting that the team has yet to forward QB Derek Carr permission to seek a trade. It is inevitable that Carr and the Raiders are headed for divorce. However, Carr has yet to give the team a list of teams that he’d like to be traded to, which is important. Carr can veto any trade offer per the language in his current deal.
When it comes to time, the Raiders do not have a lot of it. February 15 is the date that the team has to make a move whether it’s a trade or grant Carr his outright release since that is the date when the quarterback’s $40.4 million guarantee for 2023 becomes official. If the Raiders can’t find a dance partner, they can cut Carr while taking a $5.625 million dead cap hit. But considering the fact that competent starting quarterbacks are hard to come by in the NFL, it would be wise for the Raiders to get top compensation in return for Carr’s services. -1/30/23 by Anthony Cervino (@therealnflguru)
Brock Purdy dealing with torn UCL
NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero is reporting 49ers QB Brock Purdy (UCL) suffered a complete tear of his UCL in Sunday’s NFC Championship loss to the Eagles. Pelissero notes that the quarterback is hopeful that he can undergo a UCL repair rather than Tommy John Surgery.
The 49ers should be feeling the pressure. This is a team that went all-in with the acquisition of Christian McCaffrey, but once again fell short. At some point, bringing in a quarterback upgrade must become a priority. A team whose Super Bowl window is wide open can’t perennially rely on the average and unproven.
There are two directions the 49ers can go in. They can stick with Purdy and Trey Lance while signing a veteran presence or make an attempt to sign Tom Brady to help them get over the hump. -1/30/23 by Anthony Cervino (@therealnflguru)
Could Tom Brady return to the Buccaneers?
Per NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are keeping an open door regarding QB Tom Brady returning to the team in 2023. Garafolo noted that Brady will be considered when it comes to hiring a new offensive coordinator in the wake of the firing of former OC Byron Leftwich.
Brady’s NFL playing future is an enigma. The lock NFL Hall of Fame signal-caller has yet to decide on whether or not he will retire or play in 2023. However, considering how disastrous his 2022 campaign ended, one could assume that goat-12 will give it another go, though his tenure with the Buccaneers is more than likely over. –1/29/23 by Anthony Cervino (@therealnflguru)
Stetson Bennett Arrested
WFAA.com is reporting that Former National Championship-winning Georgia QB Stetson Bennett was arrested for public intoxication. Reports indicate that Bennett was arrested at 6 a.m. ET in Old East Dallas. Police reports suggest that there was banging on doors around the neighborhood, but did not specify if Bennett was the party involved. The 25-year-old was released at 11 a.m. ET.
Bennett is slated as a day-three prospect in the upcoming 2023 NFL Draft. He did not elect to participate in the Senior Bowl, turning down his invitation. Perhaps playing in the Senior Bowl would be a better idea than reportedly being at the center of public mischief. -1/29/23 by Anthony Cervino (@therealnflguru)
