Quentin Johnston – 2023 Fantasy Football Outlook

Quentin Johnston - 2023 Fantasy Football Outlook

Wide Receiver – TCU

6’3″ 208 lbs

1st Round – 21st pick (21st Overall) Los Angeles Chargers

Pre-Draft Profile

Quentin Johnston was one of my favorite receivers coming into this draft along with Jordan Addison. On tape, Johnston’s size and speed are instantly recognizable. Additionally, he had a productive college career finishing with 115 catches for 2,190 yards and 14 touchdowns over 32 games while at TCU. That earned him First-Team All Big-12 in both 2021 and 2022.

Johnston worked all over the field for TCU but was mostly featured on the outside running vertical and crossing routes. Notably, one knock on him was his hands as he had six drops last season.

Fantasy Football Outlook

Johnston will be paired with one of the most talented quarterbacks in the league, Justin Herbert who has the arm and accuracy to match Johnston’s skillset. He will be part of a crowded receiving room with veterans Keenan Allen and Mike Williams, but you could argue that Johnston could be the Chargers’ most productive wideout next year. Williams is always in and out of the lineup playing just 13 games last year and missing the wildcard game against the Jaguars. As for Allen, he also played just 10 games last season and is now 31 years old.

Johnston will give the Chargers and Herbert another legit weapon for their passing game after guys like Josh Palmer and Jalen Guyton failed to really step up and be consistent options. Furthermore, Johnston is going to help Herbert and this Chargers’ passing game take a step up next season and is the future at wide receiver for this team.

In redraft leagues, I think Johnston is a solid Flex or WR3. However, he potentially could be a WR2 in his rookie season with the Chargers. Veterans Williams and Allen will help Johnston transition to the NFL while taking pressure and attention off him when he’s out there playing alongside them.

Dynasty Outlook

In a draft class filled with smaller wideouts, Johnston’s size stands out. He has proven he can play on the outside and win on deep vertical routes. On the negative side, he needs to improve on his route running but he’s solid after the catch and has the size to body out defenders and win on 50/50 balls. However, some people have compared him to veteran wide receiver A.J. Green and while that may be lofty, he does have a similar skill set.

Overall, I believe Johnston should be the first or 2nd wideout off the board and be in the top five of 1QB dynasty rookie drafts. In Superflex leagues, he’s definitely in the top 10 and potentially top five overall.

As soon as next season Johnston could be the bonafide number-one wideout in the Chargers’ offense while playing with a top-end quarterback in Justin Herbert. All in all, Johnston fell into an ideal situation that will be good for his future prospects.
