Free NFL Football Picks and Best Bets Today – Week 9
Week 9 is officially upon us. I cannot believe we have reached the halfway mark of the 2024 NFL season. Every year, it feels like it goes by faster and faster. In the spirit of Halloween this week, it is pretty spooky what has gone on for the New York Jets. Fresh off a loss to the lowly New England Patriots, Aaron Rodgers and company have dropped five of their last six games, including three of four since firing Robert Saleh. Now sitting at 3-6 in the bottom of the AFC East, the Jets trail the division-leading Buffalo Bills by 3.5 games. Additionally, they sit 2.5 games back of the Los Angeles Chargers for the final Wild Card spot in the AFC.
It is truly hard to remember a season in which the results were so far different from the expectations. Maybe the 2011 Philadelphia Eagles would like to join the party. But let’s not go down that road. There are bets to be made and money to be won. Coming off a 2-4 week here are the picks. Continue reading for our Week 9 free NFL football picks.
Miami Dolphins (+6.0) vs Buffalo Bills (-6.0)
Highlighted by the return of Tua Tagovailoa, the Dolphin’s offense returned on Sunday. The former first-round pick threw for 284 yards and a touchdown pass in his return after suffering a concussion in week two. Mike McDaniel’s group also rushed for 150 yards for the third game in a row while scoring a season-high 27 points. However, it was not enough, as the Dolphins fell 28-27 to the Arizona Cardinals on a last-second field goal by Chad Ryland.
Meanwhile, the Buffalo Bills routed the Seattle Seahawks 31-10 for their third straight victory. Josh Allen finally tossed his first interception of the season in the first half. Nonetheless, the two-time Pro Bowler tossed two touchdown passes in the victory while connecting with six different Bills receivers. Buffalo’s defense also harassed Geno Smith all afternoon long, holding the Seahawks to 233 total yards and a miserable 1-7 on third down. While Tagovailoa gives the Dolphins a much-needed spark, the Bills have gone 11-2 against them under Allen. Expect that trend to continue on Sunday.
Pick: Bills (-6.0)
Dallas Cowboys (+3.5) vs Atlanta Falcons (-3.5)
Coming out of their bye week, the Cowboys appeared as if they were going to stun the San Francisco 49ers after taking an early seven-point lead. Nonetheless, the defending NFC Champions scored 21 unanswered points to hand Dallas its fourth loss in its last six games. Once again plagued by their inability to run the football, the Cowboys have averaged just 72.7 rushing yards over their last three games. This is the lowest mark in the NFL.
Now, one game clear for the top spot in the NFC South, the Falcons held on to defeat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 31-26. Kirk Cousins tossed four touchdown passes for the second game this season. Along with this, Kyle Pitts hauled in a season-high 91 yards and two receiving scores. Dallas is in desperate need of a win to keep pace with the red-hot Washington Commanders in the NFC East. Nonetheless, it’s hard to see them keeping up with Atlanta and making enough stops on defense. Swallow the 3.5 points and bet the Falcons.
Pick: Falcons (-3.5)
Washington Commanders (-4.0) vs New York Giants (+4.0)
Washington appeared to be on its way to a loss against the Chicago Bears. Down three with 25 seconds left and no timeouts, Jayden Daniels found Noah Brown for a 52-yard Hail Mary to give the Commanders an improbable 18-15 victory. Playing through an injured rib, the reigning number two overall pick amassed nearly 400 yards of offense in the victory.
The Giants fell 26-18 to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday Night Football. Losers of three straight games, Brian Daboll’s group has scored just 18 total points during that period. Furthermore, Daniel Jones has thrown just six touchdown passes on the season. He also ranks 29th in yards per attempt (6.1) and quarterback rating (79.5). Washington is 6-0-1 against the spread in its last seven games and needs to keep winning to keep pace atop the NFC East. Meanwhile, the Giants appear to be heading toward another top-five draft pick.
Pick: Commanders (-4.0)
Los Angeles Rams (-1.0) vs Seattle Seahawks (+1.0)
The Rams picked up a much-needed win over the Minnesota Vikings on Thursday Night Football and are one game behind the NFC West-leading Arizona Cardinals. With Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua back in the fold, the duo combined for 12 receptions for 157 yards and a touchdown in the victory. Moreover, Kyren Williams found the end zone for the seventh straight game to open the season.
Following their 3-0, the Seahawks have lost four of their last five games. Primarily due to the play of their defense, the team has given up over 182 yards on the ground during their last three games. As a result, they have allowed over 27 points per game during that stretch of time, including 31 to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. While Seattle should be able to move the ball and score points in this game, the Rams are completely different, with Kupp and Nacua back in the fold. Give me Los Angeles to win a close one in one of the games of the weekend.
Pick: Rams (-1.0)
Los Angeles Chargers vs Cleveland Browns (O/U 41.5)
Los Angeles beatdown the New Orleans Saints 26-8 on Sunday. However, the Chargers offense continues to undergo its struggles. They have scored 15 points or less in three of their past five games. Along with this, Jim Harbaugh’s group ranks 24th in the league in passing yards per game (194) and 23rd in total yards per game (311.1).
Now, under the guidance of Jameis Winston, the Cleveland Browns stunned the Baltimore Ravens 29-24. The former number-one overall pick threw for 334 yards while tossing three touchdown passes in the victory. With another tough defense on tap, the Chargers have yet to allow an opponent to score more than 20 points against them. Furthermore, every single one of Los Angeles’s games this season has gone under the number. That will continue in this one.
Pick: Under 41.5
Las Vegas Raiders vs Cincinnati Bengals (O/U 46.5)
Las Vegas fell 27-20 to the Kansas City Chiefs. Since knocking off the Cleveland Browns in week four, the Raiders have lost four straight games. Largely due to the play of its defense, Patrick Graham’s unit ranks 27th in the league in points allowed per game (26.3). Additionally, they sit 19th in rushing yards allowed per game (129.9).
Now two games back in the wild-card hunt, the Bengals fell 37-17 to the Philadelphia Eagles. Cincinnati could not slow down Saquon Barkley and Jalen Hurts. Philadelphia rushed for 161 yards while punting the ball just once. Zac Taylor’s team has now allowed over 30 points in three of their last five contests. Joe Burrow and company should do the majority of the scoring in this one, with the Raiders providing enough offense to push the total over the number.
Pick: Over 46.5
