Greetings folks! Welcome to a new edition of a beginner’s guide to sports betting. For this week’s installment, we’ll cover the game of tennis.
To the average joe, the sport of tennis probably is not high up on the totem pole. Even so, when the average joe wants to make a sports betting wager, they’ll most likely steer to the game of football, basketball, or even soccer.
The fact of the matter is, the game of tennis is one of the most bet-on sports in the world and you wouldn’t even know it. Tournaments are held on a week-by-week basis all around the globe with hundreds of players competing to be crowned champion.
Betting on tennis is much less complicated than you think, and the plethora of options you can choose from makes the sport so fun to wager on. Outright betting, set betting, match betting, prop betting. The whole nine yards.
So if you’re new to the game, or the betting market as a whole, you’ve come to the right spot. I’ll go over the ins and out’s of tennis betting to ensure more money is reaching your bank account week by week and tournament by tournament.
Let’s hop right into Tennis Betting – A Beginners Guide.
Types of Tennis Bets
Outright / Winner of Tournament
Similar to all sports, the most common bet in the sport of tennis is the outright bet. In plain terms, who do you believe will win the tournament at hand? However, these bets are the hardest to win. Think about it. You are placing a wager on a player you believe can win seven consecutive matches, give or take. You’ll see odds ranging anywhere from +500 to +10000 or even higher.
Think about this as a small risk high reward. I recommend you take 1/5 of your average unit to place on an outright winner. By doing this, you’ll be able to bet on a bunch of different players you believe will come out victorious.
Match Betting
Match betting and outright betting have similar features; however, the main difference is you are placing a wager on a player to just win one match. The odds in match betting rely heavily on a players ranking and status.
For example, take a player like Rafa Nadal, who has 22 grand slams under his belt. In the early stages of a tournament, you’ll most likely see the odds on Rafa at -500 or even higher based on his opponent. Now, take two players with similar statuses and rankings. Those odds will most likely steer towards even money, making the match more attractive to bet on, but harder to predict.
Wagering on a single match is a great way for newbies to get into the tennis betting market. It will allow you to get a good feel for player tendencies which you can learn from before moving to the outright market. Knowledge is key folks.
Set Betting
Set betting is a bit more complex than the other two stated above. To understand scoring in tennis, it’s helpful to know that matches consist of points, games, and sets. Each set is best to six games and to win a game, a player must win four points. Men’s tennis is best of 5 sets and women’s is best of 3 sets.
In this type of bet, you’re not only betting on the winner of a match but what the outcome in sets will be. For example, betting platforms will portray the odds as:
Rafa Nadal to win 3-0 in sets, +650
Rafa Nadal to win 3-1 in sets, +550
Rafa Nadal to win 3-2 in sets, +850
In this example, if you believe that Nadal is matched up with a tough opponent, you may want to take the “3-2” in sets since you believe it will be a close match. This bet is not easy to predict by any means, which is why the payout can be hefty if predicted correctly.
Prop Betting
Betting on props in tennis is an area where you can get very strategic to find an edge for some hefty returns. Sportsbooks will give you a proposition (aka “prop” bet) regarding an event, and you, the better, simply have to predict if that outcome will come to fruition. See below for a select list of prop bets you can wager on:
- Will Rafa Nadal win the first set?
- Will the second set be shorter or longer than 30 minutes?
- Will Rafa Nadal tally over or under eight aces in the match?
- Will there be a tie-break in the third set?
If you are looking for a fun bet to wager on, the prop bet is for you.
So, there it is folks, Tennis Betting – A Beginners Guide. What I provided you with, in my opinion, are the most popular bets one can make within the sport of tennis. These are just a select few. You can get involved in many other bets that will make sense as you get more into the game. It’s probably one of the best sports you can bet on. Highly exciting, but more importantly, highly lucrative.
Let’s be great folks. Happy betting.
