Top 12 Dynasty Quarterback Rankings

Top-12-Dynasty-Quarterback-Rankings-trevor-lawrence

One of the most challenging things to do in dynasty fantasy football leagues is to make your rankings. This is because there are many different stages a team could be in, just like the real NFL. Teams are contending, retooling, or rebuilding. Based on the stage of your team, certain quarterbacks have more value than others.

On the other hand, the quarterback position is the one where age matters the least. Just like every position, the top guys are perfect for nearly any situation. Patrick Mahomes or Josh Allen are elite options, no matter what stage your team might be in. You’re getting seven or more years of production even though the players are 26 or 27 years old, which would be near the peak of their career for any other position.

However, when you reach age 31 or older, most quarterbacks fall in production and could be replaced if they struggle. This differs from younger quarterbacks who have guaranteed contracts and will get multiple opportunities to be a starter. While age isn’t as crucial in quarterbacks, it still matters because of numerous factors. Overall, many factors go into ranking these quarterbacks, which are conveyed below. Continue reading and let me know what you agree with or disagree with in my Top 12 Dynasty Quarterback Rankings.

Tier 1

1. Patrick Mahomes

Patrick Mahomes is the best fantasy quarterback in the league right now, and if you could build a team around one player, I don’t see how you could pass on him. Not much needs said about Mahomes as he is 27, on a great offense, has unbelievable talent, and will be a top quarterback in the league until he retires. Since 2018 Mahomes has averaged 21.4 PPG and has had multiple seasons reaching 25 PPG. In addition, Mahomes is a very solid runner who can give you a 300-400 rushing-yard season on top of all this.

Furthermore, since 2018 Mahomes has finished on average as the QB4, which is higher than any other quarterback. Most importantly, Mahomes has the highest floor and ceiling combination of any player in fantasy football and will continue to be a top-end asset for years to come.

2. Josh Allen

In the same tier, we have Josh Allen, who you could argue is the QB1 because of his rushing ability. Despite Allen’s size, the type of hits he takes raises questions about his long-term durability and if he will be able to continue this playstyle his whole career. Allen is still one of the best NFL quarterbacks despite having issues with turnovers. Nevertheless, Allen has an elite floor and ceiling combination, which warrants his spot as a Tier 1 dynasty quarterback.

Tier 2

3. Jalen Hurts

After a phenomenal 2022 season, Hurts has jumped up the rankings landing him at the top spot in Tier 2. Hurts has proven he is an elite NFL quarterback leading the Eagles to a 13-1 record and sitting atop the NFL MVP odds. On top of being a great passer, the elite rushing upside he provides gives Hurts the phenomenal floor and ceiling combination you are looking for. So far, in 2022, Hurts is the QB1 in fantasy averaging 26.7 PPG.

For these mobile quarterbacks, there are questions about their ability to stay healthy and continue to give you this rushing upside long-term. In spite of all of this, Hurts is a phenomenal option to build your team around, even if he isn’t in the same tier as Mahomes or Allen.

4. Joe Burrow

Joe Burrow is an elite-level quarterback and is currently the QB4 this year, averaging 23.6 PPG. While Burrow isn’t necessarily immobile, he doesn’t have the same rushing upside as guys like Hurts and Allen. One other advantage Burrow has is his long-term weapons, Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins.

With Burrow, you love the talent and the connection with two elite young wide receivers for the long term. At age 26, Burrow is a great quarterback who will be putting up fantastic numbers for the rest of his career. You can get excited about this guaranteed passing production when building your roster around Burrow.

5. Justin Herbert

Similar to Burrow, Herbert is a phenomenal pocket passer with decent mobility. I can’t fault you if you want to move him ahead of Burrow. One difference, however, is that Herbert doesn’t have the same elite long-term elite receiver attachment. Herbert’s top receivers, Keenan Allen and Mike Williams are 30 and 28 and won’t be there for the long run.

It could be argued that Herbert is more talented than Burrow, but Herbert has struggled a little this year, even if it’s not all his fault. Without a doubt, anyone would love to have Herbert as their quarterback as he finished as the QB2, averaging 23.8 PPG last year, and is the QB9 with 17.6 PPG this year. One concern with Herbert is the talent surrounding him; however, Herbert himself is still a great talent and an elite-level asset in the dynasty fantasy football leagues.

Tier 3

6. Justin Fields

While many believe it’s premature to rank Fields above Lamar Jackson, these two should be in a tier of their own, no matter who you think is better. Fields has been phenomenal this year, sitting at the QB5 with 21.5 PPG and a 1,000-yard rushing season. Undoubtedly, Fields has the highest rushing upside of any quarterback on this list, but he still needs to prove himself a passer.

In contrast to all of this, Fields has the potential to be a good NFL quarterback. He was the 11th pick in the NFL Draft and looked like a good passer with excellent arm talent at Ohio State. Unfortunately, Fields has struggled this year, playing with a terrible offensive line and wide receivers. This makes me less excited about Fields because you have the unknown if he will be able to get these weapons around him that allow him to be a good NFL quarterback.

Nevertheless, Fields has the tools to be a good passer, and with the top-end rushing upside, he could very well be a Tier 1 or Tier 2 dynasty quarterback in the future.

7. Lamar Jackson

Jackson is a quarterback on the same tier as Fields due to his elite-level rushing upside. Differing from Fields, Jackson has proven he can be a successful NFL quarterback winning the MVP award in 2019, which could warrant you bumping him even higher than this. This year Jackson is the QB6 with 20.26 PPG but has also missed significant time due to a knee injury.

While age is the least important factor for a quarterback, it comes into play with a rushing quarterback due to their play style. Even though Jackson has shown he can be an excellent passer with terrific rushing upside, he is two years older than Fields and has already suffered a knee injury. As a result, Jackson’s rushing upside is likely to decrease as he gets older, where Fields will stay the same until he deals with a significant injury or gets a little older.

Of course, Jackson is still a great quarterback to have on your team, but you can’t help but be a little concerned about these recent injuries as a rushing quarterback.

Tier 4

8. Trevor Lawrence

This year Lawrence has finally shown why he deserved to be the number one draft pick and has lived up to his expectations. Even with a slow start, Lawrence is the QB7 with 19.2 PPG this year. Lawrence is a phenomenal pocket passer who has shown excellent arm talent, has outstanding accuracy, and can move in the pocket very well. Furthermore, Lawrence is a great pocket passer who will continue to give you great passing production for a long time. Even though Lawrence has a lower ceiling due to his capped rushing upside, he has proven he will be an outstanding real-life quarterback giving him such a high floor.

I like the weapons around Lawrence, as he finally has a good coach in Doug Pederson, on top of some very solid playmakers. Next year Lawrence will have Travis Etienne, Calvin Ridley, Christian Kirk, Zay Jones, and Evan Engram. I expect Lawrence to keep improving with a good offense, and I would love to have him on my dynasty team for the future.

9. Tua Tagovailoa

Tagovailoa struggled early in his NFL career, being put in a below-average Miami Dolphins offense. Many were quick to call the former number-five overall pick a bust. However, Tagovailoa has been impressive this season, sitting as the QB10, averaging 18.8 PPG. While many don’t believe Tagovailoa is all that talented, the former number five overall pick checked every box you look for in a quarterback prospect. Finally, getting a great coach, wide receiver core, and overall offense, it’s not surprising that Tagovailoa has been very good.

Tagovailoa has the least rushing upside of anyone in this group, which lands him in this tier. On top of this, his WR1, Tyreek Hill, is 28, but his overall situation will be very good for many years to come. Finally, despite the struggles Tagovailoa has faced at the end of the year, he is a great value here at the bottom of Tier 4.

Tier 5

10. Deshaun Watson

So far this year, Watson has been disappointing, but this was somewhat expected after not playing for two years. He is still 27, and many are quick to forget that from 2018 to 2020, Watson was a top-five quarterback every single year. In addition, Watson is stepping into a much better situation than before. Cleveland has weapons like Amari Cooper, Nick Chubb, and David Njoku. On top of that, the Texans’ offensive line was ranked 23 by PFF back in 2020, whereas the Browns are ranked number two by PFF.

This is a substantial increase in help for Watson across the board. There are concerns about how rusty Watson has looked coming back, but Watson is an elite talent. You should be looking to buy him long-term, especially with this discount.

11. Dak Prescott

Prescott is another excellent pocket-passing quarterback with a high floor for years to come. Even though he hasn’t looked great this year, as he is the QB14 with 17.6 PPG, keep in mind that he missed time at the beginning of the year. Additionally, the Cowboy’s defense and their running game have been great this year, so Prescott hasn’t had to throw the ball a ton.

Prescott will be the starting quarterback for the Cowboys for a few years, which is very important. You don’t want a guy whose contract and spot aren’t guaranteed. To add to this, Prescott is in an excellent position with a great WR1, CeeDee Lamb, as well as solid pass catchers in Dalton Schultz and Tony Pollard. Finally, it should be noted that Prescott has averaged 20+ points per game in the past three seasons, and I expect that to continue going forward.

12. Kyler Murray

Murray is the biggest faller on this list due to his recent ACL injury in Week 14. This is terrible news as Murray was seen as a borderline top-five quarterback before the season started. However, he has been in a lousy situation for the whole year. On top of that, before the injury, Murray was the QB9, averaging 18.9 PPG. That’s all despite tons of injuries and suspensions to his offensive line and guys like DeAndre Hopkins, Marquise Brown, and Rondale Moore all of who have missed significant time. While the ACL injury bumps Murray down, he is still a top-12 fantasy quarterback due to his upside.

Although it is unlikely that Murray will come back to full form as a runner and playmaker immediately, after a full year, it is likely that Murray can get back to his former self. If this happens, Murray is still a top dynasty quarterback who is only 25 years old. There are injury concerns surrounding Murray, but he has such a high upside. If he properly rehabs, he could return to being an elite dynasty quarterback in the upcoming years.
