Coach and Offensive Coordinator: Skip Holtz

Skip Holtz has a solid NCAA resume with just under 20 years of head coaching experience at the D1 level.  He has an overall record of 152-121 including 8 bowl wins and 2 Conference Championships.  His latest stint was Louisiana Tech’s head coach from 2013 to 2021.  He tends to run a close 50/50 split when it comes to passing vs rushing, based on his last several seasons at La Tech.  Looking mainly at his time at La Tech, Skip’s offenses tend to be around average, statistically.  He has had a few strong offenses that ranked towards the top nationally that could push the ball down the field in big plays. I don’t expect to see any spectacular coaching offensively for the Stallions. Mainly a steady balanced approach is what we will get with a slight lean to a little more passing. Definitely seems to be a step down from most of the other coaches in the league.

Roster

Quarterbacks: Alex McGough and J’Mar Smith

Coach Skip loves his versatile QBs. McGough was the Stallions’ first quarterback pick in the draft and seems to be the guy that gets the first crack at starting the season.  This will be interesting to watch because he has tough competition in Smith, who was a former QB for Skip on a team that went 10-1 with Smith as the starting QB.  Both have similar college statistics. McGough seems to be more accurate and Smith tends to throw the ball deeper and be a tad bit more mobile. McGough has more NFL experience as he has been on several teams and practice squads.

I like McGough to start the season, but I think he will be on a tight leash. If he isn’t performing well, Skip won’t hesitate to play Smith.

Running Backs: Tony Brooks-James and CJ Marable

No one really stands out from the other right now from a starter perspective.  They were drafted just picks apart in the USFL draft.  Tony is faster, but Marable is better at changing direction.  I think Tony will be used in the return game quite a bit like he was during his time at Oregon.  Marable is quite the workhorse. He was used a lot in both running and receiving in college.  Marable received more rushing attempts and receptions than Tony did in college alone. Marable also had a knack for finding the endzone a good amount with 41 total touchdowns.

I like Marable to possibly lead the backfield in touches early in the season and especially getting the third down and 2-minute drill work.  However, I think the touches stay pretty split with these two with neither back getting over 60 percent of the workload.  Stallions did add a third running back, Jordan Chunn so this could be a 3 headed backfield some.

Wide Receivers: Victor Bolden Jr, Osiris Mitchell, Peyton Ramzy, and Manasseh Bailey

  • Bolden was the first WR selected in the draft and will for sure be the Stallions’ top option.  He has the skill to be a playmaker and big-play threat here with having 4 years of NFL experience under his belt.
  • Mitchell will be a big body target for the Stallions, which will make him a red zone target and deep/jump ball guy for them.
  •  Ramzy will bring along good route running, quickness, and a little size.  Very solid WR that will be pushing for a good amount of playing time.
  • Bailey is another WR that will bring speed to this team.  Defenses will have to have quick cornerbacks if they want to hang with these guys.

This should be a fun wide receiver group to watch.  Bolden will be the WR1 for sure and a top wideout in the league.  Time will tell which guy comes out to be the WR2 with this offense

Tight End: Cary Angeline

Stallions only drafted one tight end.  Angeline is a very good pass catcher. He is also very athletic for being 6’6. He had great production in college and will be a big mismatch for defenses in the USFL. He will get a good amount of work this year. His only downfall is that he needs to work on his blocking.
