USFL 2022 – Pittsburgh Maulers

Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator: Kirby Wilson and John Tomlison

This is Wilson’s first head coaching gig after being a long-time running back coach. We don’t know exactly how he is wanting to run his offense but he was interviewed saying that he wants to control the line of scrimmage, secure the football, and control the clock. This leads me to think that they are going to pound the football and try not to beat themselves.  Doesn’t sound too exciting from the standpoint of a fan and I don’t think this will be a team that puts up high scores. 

Quarterbacks: Kyle Lauletta and Josh Love

Neither are spectacular quarterbacks that I think will put up serious numbers in this safe style of offense I’m projecting them to run. Lauletta is a solid quarterback who just lacks Pro-level arm strength for the NFL. He will take care of the ball and be the starting quarterback for this team.  

Running Backs: Garrett Groshek, Madre London

Groshek is a patient back who is a very solid pass catcher. London wasn’t as good in college but he absolutely dominated the European league with over 2,000 rushing yards and an MVP to his name. I think he will fit in well here and end up being the lead back for Kirby Wilson and his heavy approach in the run game.  

Wide Receivers: Jeff Thomas, Bailey Gaither, Branden Mack, Delvon Hardaway, and Tre Walker

The Maulers definitely went after speed here with this receiver core. Their big receiver and red zone target will be Branden Mack. Thomas is probably the most notable receiver here with the only real NFL experience. He should lead this receiver core in targets although this may not be a team we want to target for fantasy.  

Tight End: Matt Seybert

Matt Seybert will be able to provide solid run blocking for this team so he will be on the field a lot. He could catch a touchdown or two in the red zone.
