2023 NFL Combine Risers and Fallers: Quarterbacks

2023 NFL Combine Risers and Fallers: Quarterbacks

The 2023 NFL Combine is here and flying by. Now, it’s time to recap the biggest risers and fallers from the quarterback position. From seeing all of these players up close in Indianapolis, I will be giving out evaluations on all these players based on position, starting with the quarterbacks.

This 2023 rookie class is extremely interesting, with all these players being ranked so close together. While Young is the consensus number one pick at the moment, there isn’t one quarterback you can point to and say for sure will go number one.

This class is also one of the most athletically gifted in recent memory, with Anthony Richardson and Will Levis leading the way. Of course, there are questions about all of these quarterbacks, but almost all of them are great athletes, which is extremely important for the NFL Combine. With that being said, it’s time to break down which of these quarterbacks’ stocks will be rising or falling as a result of the NFL Combine.

Risers

Anthony Richardson

By far, the biggest story of the day and the weekend was Anthony Richardson’s freakish performance at the combine. Richardson was unbelievable in his measurements, with a Raw Athletic Score of 10. This measures your size, weight, and workout numbers to give you a score out of 10.

First, Richardson broke the quarterback record for the broad jump with a 10 ’09”. He then proceeded to follow this up with a record-breaking vertical jump of 40.5″. Then, in the coveted 40-yard dash, Richardson sent the stadium into a frenzy with his 4.43 40 time. Overall, Richardson looked good, throwing the ball. Additionally, he had another wow moment on the deep ball drill. The buzz around the place was absolutely electric following his performance.

It now seems that there’s no way Richardson falls past the Panthers at 9th overall. The talk surrounding the Combine has been the odds of Richardson going first overall in the 2023 NFL Draft. Officially after his performance, Richardson’s odds shot up by around 200 points, according to your betting provider. Not too long ago, it seemed like a reach that Richardson would even go in the top 10, and now he’s in the mix for the first overall pick.

Will Levis

Will Levis was a player who was expected to have a great combine, and he did; it was just overshadowed by Richardson. Levis didn’t run the 40 or get tested, but seeing him in person just confirmed how big he is. Personally, I was most impressed by Levis’s combination of accuracy and ball velocity during his throwing drills.

He ended up with a 59 MPH ball velocity, but it wasn’t talked about as much due to the other great measurements in the combine. Nonetheless, On the most crucial throwing drills, the deep ball, Levis was very good and was right up there with CJ Stroud and Richardson. Even though Levis may not have had a jaw-dropping performance like Richardson, It was great to see that all of his elite traits are just that or close to it.

I don’t see Levis with a shot to go number one. However, after showing well during the whole Combine process, it’s not ridiculous at all to expect him to be a top-10 pick. On the other hand, I don’t find it quite as likely that he’ll go to the Colts. After this weekend, I could see the Falcons or Panthers as a much more likely landing spot for him. That’s largely due to the rise of Richardson and Stroud playing well enough to hold his spot near the top.

Stetson Bennett

Transitioning over from the consensus top quarterbacks, a player who had a really good day for himself was Stetson Bennett. Regarding his measurements, Bennett measured in at 5’11 and 192 pounds which is still small, but it could have been worse for him. Even though Bennett is not the most athletic quarterback, he tested decently, running a 4.67 40. Bennett also looked good on broad and vertical jump, which brought his total RAS to 7.71.

When Bennett threw next to potential top-10 pick Levis, he was able to match almost everything he did. Levis has one of the strongest arms of the Draft, with a 59 MPH ball velocity. However, this was the exact same speed as Bennett’s. Regarding his arm strength, Bennett went toe to toe with Levis during the deep ball drill.

During the drill, Bennett showed outstanding arm strength and placement on almost all his balls, causing gasps throughout the stadium. All in all, Bennett seemed like a mid 5th Round pick before the Combine, but now I wouldn’t be shocked if he goes as early as the 3rd Round.

Fallers

Malik Cunningham

Heading over to some quarterbacks who didn’t do quite as well, we have Malik Cunningham. Despite running a good 40 time at 4.53, his throwing drills looked miserable. Standing next to some of these other guys, it was very noticeable that Cunningham’s accuracy and arm strength were not up to NFL standards.

Seeing him up close up, his mechanics looked sloppy, awkward, and inconsistent throughout. Cunningham did nothing partially well in these throwing drills and was dominated by the players going next to him. In one of the most critical drills, the deep ball, Cunningham just couldn’t get it far down the field and was rather inaccurate.

It was truly a disappointing day, as Cunningham was already a late-round pick. Even though Cunningham showed good speed, due to the number of other weaknesses in his game, he needed to have a decent overall combine to boost his draft stock.

Clayton Tune

Ending the category off with Clayton Tune. He was another one of these guys whose stock dropped from a less-than-stellar performance. However, Tunewas able to limit the damage due to his fantastic testing numbers. Tune had a great day in that regard running a 4.64 40. Overall, he did well enough in his other drills to receive a 9.72 RAS.

However, similar to Cunningham, Tune just looked not up to NFL standards when placing him next to these top guys. During the accuracy drills, Tune was inconsistent and never showed any memorable moments. Tune needed a good performance in that regard to give him a boost in the draft. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen, and I see Tune staying at the bottom and falling slightly in the NFL Draft.
