2024 NFL Draft Decisions and Transfers Shake Up Rankings
It’s the time of the year—bowl games and the College Football Playoffs are in the near future, and NFL Draft prospects are beginning to make decisions on their future. Many highly touted prospects will enter the 2024 NFL Draft, while others will return to school for another year or transfer to a better situation to help their Draft stock. With the transfer portal opening up, the mayhem has begun. Here are the latest 2024 NFL Draft decisions and key players headed to new schools.
Who has Declared for the 2024 NFL Draft?
RB Frank Gore Jr., Southern Miss: The son of the former legendary running back announced on December 2 that he will enter the 2024 NFL Draft. Gore Jr. had a very good year at Southern Miss, posting 1,131 yards on 231 carries and ten touchdowns. With a questionable amount of depth in the class of running backs, he will be considered a potential late-day-two to early-day-three pick for a team looking to add to their running back depth.
CB Nate Wiggins, Clemson: One of the best cornerbacks in the country announced on November 29 that he will be a part of the 2024 NFL Draft. Wiggins made the most of the season, showing off his coverage ability and his versatility for a defense. With several talented defensive backs that could enter the Draft, he was the one that shot up the rankings throughout the season, putting him in a spot to be a round-one selection.
RB Braelon Allen, Wisconsin: Announcing on November 28, Allen has declared for the 2024 NFL Draft. A dynamic running back once thought of as the RB1 of the class, his season has been up and down compared to years past. He’s had a few fumbling issues this season and games where he didn’t have many yards on the ground, but he certainly shined in many others. With the lack of depth at the position, Allen has the potential to be one of the top running backs selected in the Draft.
WR Johnny Wilson, Florida State: The Senior Bowl announced on December 4 that Wilson has accepted his invite, indicating he will be declaring for the 2024 NFL Draft. He’s a big-bodied receiver with respectable speed on the outside. With the addition of Keon Coleman, he more often shared the spotlight and didn’t have the stats we expected from him, but there’s a lot Wilson brings to an offensive passing game. The receiver class is once again loaded with talent, leaving Wilson’s draft stock up in the air. He certainly has the potential to be a day-two pick, with many others being near that category.
*Many have accepted their 2024 NFL Draft All-Star Game invites, meaning they are likely entering the 2024 NFL Draft as well.
Who is Returning to School?
QB Graham Mertz, Florida: As he announced on November 30, Mertz will return to Florida for another year. He started his college career at Wisconsin, where he was a four-star prospect by 24/7 and the third-ranked pro quarterback in the class. Mertz spent four years there before transferring to Florida last year. He was thought to be one of the better quarterbacks in the country but still has something to prove to NFL teams. He’ll be a quarterback to watch as 2025 NFL Draft rankings start rolling out over the summer.
