What is a stash in dynasty fantasy football?

In Dynasty Fantasy Football, a “stash” generally refers to a player that a fantasy football manager adds to their roster with the expectation that the player will not contribute much early on, but could potentially become a valuable fantasy asset in the future.

For example, a rookie who has a lot of potential, but is buried on the depth chart of his current NFL team, or is returning from an injury, could be considered the type of player that you want to stash. The idea is that the fantasy manager is stashing a player on their roster with the mindset that he will develop into a productive player in the future.

The advantage of stashing a player is that if they do develop into a valuable player in the future, the fantasy manager can reap the benefits with very little risk when it comes to their price point in a rookie draft or otherwise. They also would not have to compete with other managers for that player’s services on the waiver wire or through a trade once they emerge since he is already rostered.

However, stashing a player also means that the manager is using a roster spot on a player who may not contribute much in the short term, so it is important to weigh the potential benefits against the cost of carrying the player on the roster. Stashing a player is a risk versus reward proposition.
