5 USFL Rules You Should Know
While most of the rules are your standard NFL rules, there are a few important differences to note when understanding the USFL rules! Below you will find some USFL rules that I think could make big impacts in the game, and in fantasy points!
Three options after scoring a touchdown
- 1 point kick attempt from the 15-yard line.
- 2 point attempt from the 2-yard line, ran as a scrimmage play.
- 3 point attempt ran as a scrimmage play but from the 10-yard line.
There are a total of 9 points up for grabs on any touchdown. I think this leads to higher scoring (more fantasy points) per game. This also leads to higher chances for overtime (given that you have an extra point up for grabs compared to normal NFL rules).
Throw two forward passes behind the line of scrimmage
This is going to open up the “trick plays” big time as well as spread out the field a lot more. Defenses will definitely have to be on their toes. I think this should, and will, be used a lot once offenses get the double pass figured out.
Onside kick or 4th and 12
Instead of an onside kick, a team can take 4th and 12 from the 33-yard line. With a first down, this will be just like recovering an onside kick and they will keep the ball. If the offense doesn’t convert, then they give the ball up to the other team in good scoring position.
I think this rule will help teams get the ball back when they need it the most. We all know how unsuccessful onside kicks are. This should give teams a significantly better chance of a comeback than an onside kick, which should give us a significantly better chance of overtime fantasy points!
Overtime includes a best of three shootout
Teams will alternate possessions at the 2-yard line. Whoever comes out with the most successful conversions will be the winner. Sudden death takes place if there is a tie after three possessions. (Way fairer than the NFL in my opinion.)
Clock stoppages
The clock will stop following a first down during the final two minutes of the 2nd and 4th quarters. This will allow for more playing time, giving us the opportunity for more fantasy points.
These are the big changes in the USFL compared to the NFL. All of these are great and will make this league enjoyable to watch!
