Amari Cooper Traded to the Cleveland Browns

Around 1:00 PM CST on March 12th, it was reported by Ian Rapoport that the Cleveland Browns made a deal to acquire feature wide receiver Amari Cooper from the Dallas Cowboys. In the deal, the teams exchanged 6th round picks and the Browns also sent a 5th round pick to the Cowboys. On top of that, the Browns are also taking on the entirety of Cooper’s remaining contract.

Cooper will step in alongside Jarvis Landry as the team’s top two receivers. Across his 56 games with Dallas, he hauled in 292 passes for 3892 yards – that’s 88 receptions and 1,181 yards on a 17 game pace that would greatly improve the efficiency of the Browns’ passing game. Although it’s unlikely Cooper manages those numbers in Kevin Stefanski’s offense, he’ll create better opportunities for Baker Mayfield to succeed. Cooper gets a slight downgrade due to fewer team passing opportunities but still has good fantasy value.

For the Cowboys, the biggest part of this deal is the money. Cooper is in a big contract and the Cowboys free up about $60 million of cap space with this move. It’s very likely that Dallas has their sights set on making a big move or two when free agency begins on March 16th. The trade also opens the door for Dallas to easily re-sign Michael Gallup and/or Cedrick Wilson – two players that would have garnered a fair amount of attention on the open market. CeeDee Lamb will be the main pass catcher ahead of Gallup, Wilson and franchised tight end Dalton Schultz when the 2022 season kicks off. Every single skill player for the Cowboys gets a bump up the fantasy charts with Cooper’s departure – especially Lamb.
