Calvin Ridley Suspension: Dynasty Value Check
Monday afternoon, Adam Schefter broke the news that star wide receiver Calvin Ridley is being suspended for the 2022 NFL season for betting on games. This right away just had my head spinning thinking. For people in redraft, they know now not to draft him at all. But what do we do with him in dynasty leagues?
Do I sell him? Do I hold him? Do I buy him? These three things ran through my mind when I saw the news pop up on my phone. Looking at it like you are, we’re all thinking this if you own Ridley or not.
I am not telling you what to do, but more of giving guidance on the three things listed above. Do you have to do any of them? Absolutely not. It’s your team and your players. You do what’s best in your mind, but here at the Faceoff Sports Network, we are more than happy to discuss this with you. I am going to go over all three scenarios of selling, holding, or buying Ridley given the circumstance.
Selling
What are you really looking to get? Are you looking at picks, younger players, or even an aged veteran? The value of Ridley right now is pretty unclear and he comes with plenty of risks. Before the news, you could have gotten an aging veteran wide receiver like Keenan Allen or Mike Evans. Or running backs like Josh Jacobs and Travis Etienne Jr, even a mid-2022 1st round rookie pick. These are potentials you could have had prior to hearing this.
So what can you look at getting in return? If you are in win-now and need a receiver, try and trade him to a team that is a year or two out for the likes of Courtland Sutton. You may get an automatic reject on this, but you may be surprised how low you’ll have to go. Now you may not be able to get a one-for-one deal now unless you’re willing to take a massive hit, but trade a late 2022 2nd or early third, and you might have something going. Selling him may be harder than you think.
Holding
You have a 27-year-old receiver who is now clogging a spot on your roster for the whole 2022 season. You already lost him from Week 8 on in the 2021 season and probably got plenty of lowball offers. Now having him on your bench or IR for a year and a half as we look at it now could turn into roster hell. Does he appeal the suspension? Does he get it reduced? These are things you have to look at. We don’t know what his future holds, if he is still an Atlanta Falcon or if he ever plays another down in the NFL again. He will be 28 when he comes back after missing a year and a half of football. It’s a risk you have to take if you’re going to stick it out and burn a roster spot on him.
Buying
Why are you looking to buy him? Out of all three options, this is the hardest one for me to do. Being suspended for the whole 2022 season means he is now fantasy irrelevant for the last 28 games. For all of the 2021 season, he produced 31 receptions for 281 yards and two touchdowns in five games. Yeah, he scored double-digit fantasy points, but they weren’t the WR1 numbers we expected from him as we did in 2020. You have to think, by the time you acquire him and he plays, he will be 28 years old and is not guaranteed to still be on the team as the suspension voids his fifth-year option and he can be released. These are red flags to me because you just don’t know what the future holds. If you can get him cheap enough, he’s worth taking a shot on.
Me Personally?
From my perspective, I am holding him and will eat the roster space on the teams that I have him. I already did it for 10 games, so why not 17 more? It sucks because his value of him has tanked in the last 24 hours. If someone gives me an offer that is too good to turn down, I will easily hit accept and let him be someone else’s headache. The reality of a fair trade happening is slim to none. None of us know what the future brings with Ridley and his NFL career.
