Cam Akers Torn Achilles – Out for 2021 Season

0

The Cam Akers hype train was real this entire off-season. Akers finished the season with a few impressive outings and his touches were steadily increasing as the season progressed. As of just a few weeks ago, Akers was having an ADP of 2.06 and the RB11 according to Sleeper. All of that came to a screeching halt with the news of a Cam Akers torn Achilles that he suffered while training on July 20th.

Many were thinking Akers was going to be more of a workhorse back in the Rams offense, but with Darrell Henderson now being the lead back it can be assumed that they go back to more of the committee approach they had last season. Henderson will undoubtedly see an increased number of touches and his ADP should rise, as he was RB49 prior to the Akers injury.

However, don’t be surprised to see the Rams make a move here and add an experienced running back to their roster. They aren’t afraid to make trades as we’ve seen fairly often. With capable backs available on the open market like Le’Veon Bell, Todd Gurley, Adrian Peterson, and several others, there are definitely options available. In his time as GM of the Rams, Les Snead has also shown a penchant for a big move, so there could also be the option of a trade to a team that has a deep depth chart of running backs or an odd man out.  We could see a trade for someone like Sony Michel or Melvin Gordon here.

With all this being said, Henderson is a talented running back and his touches just were significantly increased.  Depending on when or if the Rams bring in another running back, in any upcoming draft he should be given a serious look between the 3rd-5th rounds. An Achilles tear is a brutal injury to come back from, and if you own Akers in dynasty, expect some low-ball offers. Your best bet is to hold or sell him for a decent return if you can get a solid offer.

The next names that you might consider stashing in deeper dynasty leagues are Jake Funk, a 7th-round rookie out of Maryland, and Xavier Jones, an undrafted free agent out of SMU.
