This is the first extension handed out by general manager Ryan Poles, who enters his second season as the club’s GM.

Fantasy Football Outlook

Wow, that signing came out of nowhere! Good for Cole Kmet to get paid. Last season, Kmet caught 50 passes on 69 targets for 544 yards and a career-high 7 touchdowns. Thanks to all the touchdowns, he went on to finish as the TE8 in PPR leagues. Although touchdowns scored 30% of his fantasy points, that throws up a red flag. Kmet has improved on a yearly basis when it comes to fantasy points per game since entering the NFL in 2020, ending last season as the TE16 in that category with 8.7 FPPG.

With the Bears looking to grow with Justin Fields, he gets another year with his top pass-catcher who accounted for 22.5% of the target share. With the addition of D.J. Moore, we’re curious to see if Kmet can solidify himself as the No.2 pass-catcher on the Bears and prove us wrong.

For drafting purposes, Kmet is no more than a TE2 who is very touchdown dependent. In 2021, he caught zero touchdowns and finished as the TE20. He’s better left on waivers and a player to add if he’s more productive than expected.

Dynasty Outlook

Even in dynasty fantasy football leagues, Kmet’s no better than a TE2 (TE16 overall per FantasyPros). Now he gets an extended opportunity and should be a great trade piece for someone who believes in the young 24-year-old tight end.

And while Kmet drew the 13th-most targets at his position last season with 69, he’ll now have some legitimate competition to deal with who could eat into his opportunity share. Furthermore, the Bears brought in tight end Robert Tonyan and acquired DJ Moore at the wide receiver position, who is certainly more of a threat to steal targets than Darnell Mooney.

Let’s not forget, Kmet did most of his damage with Mooney on the sideline. Overall, just on his age alone, he’s a 10th-round or later pick in start-ups, even in tight-end premium scoring formats.
