Darren Waller Traded To The Giants – Fantasy Outlook

In the midst of a busy free agency period for Las Vegas, they have agreed to a trade with the New York Giants. They are moving Pro Bowl tight end Darren Waller for the 100th pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. (Source:  Tom Pelissero) Waller has very few guarantees on the contract extension he signed with the Raiders in 2021. Because of this, he will likely seek a restructuring of the deal from the Giants front office.

Fantasy Football Outlook: Waller is one of the best stories in football. He clawed his way out of the pits of addiction, coming up from the Ravens practice squad to be claimed by the Raiders in 2018. All in all, he quickly became a star in the fantasy football space as a whole.

This was largely on the back of rising out of the trash heap of the waiver wire and finishing top five at his position in 2018. After that amazing fantasy football season, he repeated this same feat in 2019. In fact, he finished as the TE2 overall in the NFL. Additionally, this led to massive staying power in the redraft and dynasty communities heading into 2021. Due to injuries and subpar play by his signal caller, the expectations were not lived up to. In spite of this, he still made the top of our list in Consistency Score, finishing ninth in 2022. Overall, I expect him to return to his previously highly productive form.

However, he now has a fresh start as the most talented receiving option on the Giants, excluding new teammate Saquon Barkley of course. Despite the overall passing offense in New York being low on target volume, Waller will benefit due to the lack of other receiving options.

I like this new destination for him as an upgrade from his previous team as well. Jimmy Garoppolo has an average target depth of seven yards. This tendency would not mesh well with the supreme downfield threat that Waller presents as his depth of target in 2022 was 12.7 yards. He is well worth a speculative buy in dynasty leagues if you are hurting for depth at the tight end position or if you would like to stack him with any share of Daniel Jones.
